Nintendo’s official website just dropped a quiet but major clue: “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games” are real, hinting at enhanced versions of older games for the next-gen console.

There’s no denying it; Nintendo fans have a huge week ahead. The Nintendo Switch 2 will get new official announcements during next week’s Direct, happening on Wednesday, April 2. Additionally, according to the Best Buy Canada blog post, it appears the pre-orders for Switch 2 would open right after the event.

But before we even get there, Nintendo held a surprise Direct today focused on the original Switch, and it was loaded with announcements: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Rhythm Heaven Groove, and a new Virtual Game Cards feature.

The last one, in particular, might’ve just given away something big about the Switch 2.

Nintendo Quietly Confirms “Switch 2 Edition Games”

If you scroll down to the very bottom of Nintendo’s official Virtual Game Cards page, there’s a sentence that reads: “Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games can only be loaded on a Nintendo Switch 2 system.”

Yep, that’s real. Nintendo casually confirmed something fans have only speculated about until now: enhanced versions of Switch 1 games made specifically for Switch 2. And they’re giving them a name: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games.

The way this line is worded separates these from pure exclusives. That suggests we’ll see older or current games get a glow-up for the new hardware with better visuals, smoother performance, and maybe even some added features. It’s a quiet, small reveal, but one that says a lot.

This would be Nintendo’s version of what PlayStation does with its PS4-to-PS5 upgrades. It also fits perfectly with the confirmed Virtual Game Card system that lets you move digital games between systems, even lending them to family members, though Switch 2 Edition titles will only work on the new console.

So far, nothing has been said about upgrade pricing or which games are getting the treatment, but now we know the label exists, and it’s official.

Meanwhile, recent leaks have painted a pretty full picture of the Switch 2. It’s said to have a more powerful Nvidia T239 chip, 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM, and more (check full leaked specs here). It’ll supposedly support ray tracing and come with an 8-inch screen. The new console is expected to release in late June, with that April 2 Direct likely being the big moment.

Rumored launch titles include a new Mario Kart, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Call of Duty, Fallout, and even Elden Ring. Pricing is expected to land somewhere between $400 and $499, thanks in part to the higher hardware costs.
