NetEase has confirmed it’s allowed to create original characters for Marvel Rivals.
Marvel Rivals has been riding high since its launch late last year, quickly building a massive player base across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Season 3.5, which rolled out earlier this month, with Blade as the newest playable hero. Alongside Blade, NetEase also introduced new team-up mechanics and a ton of balance changes.
But Blade isn’t the only surprise Marvel Rivals fans should be keeping an eye on. Speaking at the Marvel Rivals Ignite tournament in Guangzhou, NetEase confirmed that it has the green light from Marvel to create completely original characters for the game.
That means heroes not pulled from the existing Marvel catalog could make their way into Rivals in the future.
NetEase Says “Stay Tuned” on Original Characters For Marvel Rivals
The confirmation came during an interview with MP1st, where Marvel Rivals game director Guangguang was asked about the possibility of introducing brand-new heroes. He said, “Yes, we are allowed to introduce original characters in Marvel Rivals.”
When asked if something was already in development, Guangguang didn’t give a clear answer. Instead, he simply added: “Stay tuned.“
That’s about as big of a tease as it gets. While it’s unclear whether NetEase actually has an original character in the works right now, the idea is now firmly on the table. With millions of players worldwide and a constantly expanding roster, an all-new face could help keep things fresh.
Recently, Marvel Rivals was labeled by some as a “gooner game” thanks to its swimsuit skins and bold cosmetic designs. Creative director Guangyun Chen pushed back on that idea, saying these outfits and styles are inspired by classic comic book designs and reflect a commitment to authenticity rather than just fan service.
