The Game Post has been sent new information about Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon, revealing the updated list of all six Runners and their abilities.

Marathon, Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter, is still in active development, with the devs running regular monthly playtests. So far, we know the game will feature six Runners at launch. Four of them: Glitch, Void, Locus, and Blackbird, were shown during the gameplay reveal and the Closed Alpha, complete with their ability kits.

The other two were only hinted at by codenames. One, Thief, was teased by game director Joe Ziegler last year. The sixth, while not officially confirmed, has been referred to as Lifeline and is understood to fill a medic role. According to our sources, the development team has made huge improvements, both visually and gameplay-wise.

Glitch: Character and Abilities Breakdown

Glitch is all about speed and disruption. She moves fast, slides even faster, and brings abilities that let her stay mobile during gunfights. Her Amplify ability boosts your movement and lowers the heat build-up from your actions, which means you can keep dashing, sliding, and double-jumping without burning out.

Her Disruptor ability lets you fire off a shock blast that knocks enemies back, and if you hold it, it charges into a stronger blast.

Check out Glitch’s full abilities breakdown below.

  • Prime Ability: Amplify
    • Overcharge your movement systems, reducing the heat buildup of movement abilities. Increases movement speed and weapon dexterity.
  • Tactical Ability: Disruptor
    • Transform your arm into a cannon and fire a high-powered energy projectile that deals damage and pushes targets away. [Hold] Overcharge your arm cannon, greatly increasing the size and damage of the blast.
  • Trait 1: Microjets
    • Activate in air to perform another jump at the cost of generating additional heat.
  • Trait 2: Power Slide
    • Grants a supercharged slide that generates additional heat.

Void: Character and Abilities Breakdown

Void is the stealth Runner. He’s great at sneaking past enemies, controlling space, and messing with visibility. His main move, Smoke Screen, throws out a disc that creates a trail of smoke, blocking vision and giving you safer paths to move or revive teammates.

He also has Active Camo, which makes him invisible for a short time. It breaks if you shoot or take damage, but it’s great for repositioning or setting up a flank.

Check out Void’s full abilities breakdown below.

  • Prime Ability: Smoke Screen
    • Throw a smoke disc that emits a line of smoke fields in front of you, disrupting the optics of those who step inside.
  • Tactical Ability: Active Camo
    • Activate your shell’s camouflage systems, pulling a shroud of invisibility over yourself.
  • Trait 1: Shadow Dive
    • Activate while airborne to slam a smoke disc into the ground, deploying a smoke field.
  • Trait 2: Shroud
    • Your shell automatically activates camouflage systems when entering any smoke field, making you invisible. Invisibility persists for a short time after leaving the smoke field.

Locus: Character and Abilities Breakdown

Locus is your go-to if you want someone strong who can take a lot of damage and hold the front line. He’s got a big energy shield called Riot Barricade that you can drop to block bullets and protect your team, especially when you need to revive a teammate or push through a tough area.

His Search and Destroy ability adds small homing rockets to your gun after doing enough damage, which really helps finish off fights. He’s also got tools to move around faster, even though he’s a heavier character, thanks to Thruster and Tactical Sprint.

Check out Locus’s full abilities breakdown below.

  • Prime Ability: Search and Destroy
    • Activate your shoulder-mounted missile pods. Dealing sustained damage to targets launches homing missiles, immobilizing and dealing damage upon impact.
  • Tactical Ability: Riot Barricade
    • Activate an energy barricade that blocks incoming damage, draining tactical ability energy over time. Taking damage drains additional energy.
  • Trait 1: Thruster
    • Activate while airborne to fire boosters that thrust you in the direction you are moving.
  • Trait 2: Tactical Sprint
    • Double-press sprint to move faster at the cost of generating additional heat.

Blackbird: Character and Abilities Breakdown

Blackbird is all about tracking enemies and helping your team make smart plays. His Echo Pulse ability sends out a big wave that marks anyone nearby, making it way easier to spot enemies through walls or smoke. He can also throw out a Tracker Drone that locks onto targets and explodes when it reaches them.

One of his coolest tricks is called Interrogation—if you finish off a downed enemy with a melee, you get a ping showing where their teammates are hiding.

Check out Blackbird’s full abilities breakdown below.

  • Prime Ability: Echo Pulse
    • Activate your shell’s advanced detection systems, releasing a series of sonar pulses that reveal the location of nearby hostiles.
  • Tactical Ability: Tracker Drone
    • Deploy a mechanized microbot that tracks down nearby hostiles and explodes, overheating any targets caught in the blast.
  • Trait 1: Interrogation
    • When pinged by a hostile Runner, you automatically receive a warning in your shell’s HUD. Performing a finisher on a Runner pings their crew.
  • Trait 2: Stalker Protocol
    • After breaking a combatant’s shields, they leave behind a lingering holographic trail for a short time.

Aux: Character and Abilities Breakdown

Aux is a support-focused Runner that helps keep your team alive and powered up. He can boost Volt-type weapons, send out a medic drone to heal either himself or a teammate, and even use a tool that does two things: it can revive a teammate from far away or shut down enemies with an EMP blast.

One of Aux’s key abilities lets him share the effects of items like Cardio Kick or Mechanic’s Kit with the whole team.

Check out Aux’s full abilities breakdown below.

  • Prime Ability: Reboot+
    • Revive a teammate from an extended distance or use EMP to shut down enemy Runners.
  • Tactical Ability: Med-Drone
    • Send a drone to heal yourself or an ally at range.
  • Trait 1: Shareware.exe
    • Using certain consumables (e.g., Cardio Kick, Mech Kit) shares their benefits with teammates.
  • Trait 2: Battery Overcharge
    • Buffs Volt-based weapons and enables a hand-clap discharge that arcs lightning. (Can’t pass through full cover; still hits hard.)

Icon: Character and Abilities Breakdown

Formerly known by the “Thief” codename, Icon is all about sneaking in, grabbing the good stuff, and getting out fast. One of Icon’s main abilities is the Pickpocket Drone, which can fly over to an enemy and steal their rarest item, dropping it nearby as a loot bag. We’re told the drone can detect invisible Runners like Void.

The Grapple Device lets Icon swing around the map quickly, perfect for flanking or escaping sticky situations.

Check out Icon’s full abilities breakdown below.

  • Prime Ability: Pickpocket Drone
    • Fire a drone that steals the rarest item from an enemy’s inventory and drops it as a bag nearby.
  • Tactical Ability: Grapple Device
    • Mobility grappling for fast repositions and chase.
  • Trait 1: X-Ray Visor
    • Highlights loot containers by the highest rarity inside; periodic enemy outlines that refreshed every few seconds (worked through smoke in tests).
  • Trait 2: The Finer Things

Rook: Character and Abilities Breakdown

Rook isn’t like the other Runners in the game. According to our source, Rook is more of a “scavenger” role than a full hero, with only two basic abilities. When you play as Rook, you drop into the match halfway through, and you always load in solo. (at least that’s how it plays right now)

You spawn with a pre-determined loadout (similar to Sponsor Kits), which means you can’t change your weapons or gear, and you don’t get any upgrades. On top of that, it looks like Rook doesn’t have any attacking abilities like the other Runners.

The idea is an intro “scavenger” entry that lets you hop in, grab a bit of loot, and extract. It’s deliberately weaker than the core roster and sits outside the six “base Runners.” We’ve also been told that you can’t pick Rook on the Marathon ship map, and they’re only available on Perimeter, Dire Marsh, and Outpost.

What’s different with Rook vs. normal Runners (per source): always solo, loadout locked, joins mid-match, no offensive ability, and no upgrades.

Check out Rook’s full abilities breakdown below.

  • Prime Ability: Recuperation
    • Heals you over time
  • Tactical Ability:  IFF Override
    • Disguises you from UESC combatants

That’s everything we’ve learned about Marathon’s roster. Apart from this, Bungie is also running a 30-day remote playtest for the game (Sep 8 to Oct 7) with daily play requirements and a $500 gift card for full completion. As for launch, Bungie said we’ll get the new release date in fall 2025 alongside a progress update.
