After reports claimed Halo Studios was heavily using generative AI in its game development, a new insider update now says that’s not the case.
Over the weekend, Halo fans have been trying to piece together what’s actually going on behind the scenes at Halo Studios. Earlier reports suggested that the studio was leaning heavily on generative AI to build its future games, using it across development, terrain design, and even gameplay systems. The claims came from content creator and insider RebsGaming, who said sources told him that generative AI was “woven into every aspect” of Halo’s development.
Naturally, that raised a lot of eyebrows. AI in game development is already a hot topic. Some took it as a sign that Microsoft might be pushing AI tech into full production across its studios. But just a day later, Rebs clarified his comments, saying people had misinterpreted what he meant.
He explained that what’s happening at Halo Studios might be closer to traditional procedural tools or workflow automation. Now, there’s another update.
Halo is not using generative AI in its game development, it’s claimed
Jez Corden, a well-known journalist and insider from Windows Central, chimed in on X (Twitter) to say that the rumors about Halo Studios using generative AI in its game development aren’t true. According to him, “Halo is not using generative AI in its game dev/art assets, etc., for its next game. Microsoft has no mandate on studios to use generative AI for games. I’m sure it’s being used for emails… but they’re not making a gen AI game here.”
In other words, the new Halo project isn’t being built by bots, and there’s no corporate directive from Microsoft forcing studios into generative AI pipelines, at least according to Corden.
While all this AI stuff has been floating around, there’s also a new report of another new Halo project. A separate multiplayer-only game, described as a long-term live service title “like Fortnite, “is reportedly in the works. It’s said to be separate from the rumored Halo: Combat Evolved remake and the next mainline entry.
But just like the AI story, none of this has been confirmed by Microsoft or Halo Studios. So, as always, take it all with a grain of salt until something official drops.
