Marathon Season 3 content has been pushed to December 8 as Bungie drops its strict seasonal schedule and restructures updates around PvE.
Marathon’s next major content drop is no longer launching on September 22. Bungie has moved the Season 3 update’s biggest additions to December 8, when a new update called Symbiosis will add permanent PvE, a refreshed Perimeter zone, a new Runner shell, a social space with a firing range, and an experimental Team Deathmatch mode.
Bungie isn’t leaving the live game untouched until then. A smaller Nightfall Refresh arrives October 6 with a full progression and economy reset, a new Rewards Pass, quality-of-life changes, and balance tuning. Vault Breaker will also return for a limited run so Bungie can collect more PvE data after the reset.

Bungie laid out the revised plan in a new development update today.
Marathon Season 3 Plans Move to December as Bungie Changes Its Update Schedule
The content originally planned for September 22 will now ship inside Symbiosis on December 8, Bungie said. October 6 becomes the next immediate checkpoint, with Bungie using the eight weeks after that update to run gameplay experiments and share what it learns before Symbiosis arrives.
“The content originally planned for September will now arrive as part of our Symbiosis update on December 8,” the developer said. “Alongside the new Runner shell, permanent PvE experience, and refreshed Perimeter zone, the update will also include a social space/firing range, an experimental TDM mode, and improvements to new player onboarding.

The bigger change is how Bungie plans to handle Marathon updates after this. The studio says it is moving away from fixed seasonal deadlines so teams have more time to build, test, and revise new features before release.
“We’re also moving away from a strict seasonal schedule. Instead of tying major updates to fixed seasonal deadlines, we’re giving the team more flexibility to build, test, and improve features before they are released.”
Bungie tied that decision directly to feedback since launch. According to the studio, players have been asking for more depth, more variety, stronger progression, and better reasons to keep playing long term.
Season 2’s progression also moved some players into the endgame too quickly while leaving others behind, which Bungie says hurt Extraction and prevented the reset from working as intended.

Symbiosis is also being positioned as the start of a longer rebuild rather than a one-off update. Bungie says more changes are planned through March and beyond, and another development blog later this month will explain how the team wants to push Marathon toward a more “alien” and dynamic survival experience.
That roadmap shift also lands at a rough moment for Marathon’s live population. As we reported earlier today, SteamPeaks recorded the game dropping to 670 concurrent players during off-peak hours today, putting it 27 players below Concord’s 697-player all-time Steam peak.
The new low underlines how much pressure is now on Bungie’s October reset and December Symbiosis update to bring players back.
