According to two new patents discovered by TheGamePost, Sony is working on new technologies to reduce the VR sickness caused by the PlayStation VR headset as well as the full-body tracking device. Even though the PS5 release date is around this year’s holiday season, players have no idea how much PS5 will cost or what it will look like.
Recently Sony Officially unveiled the new PlayStation 5 DualSense controller, an evolution of DS4 that will feature haptic feedback. It will bring true immersion to the gamers holding the controller. As for the PlayStation VR, it looks like we might get an updated version of the PS VR for next-gen. The patent’s abstract summary provides us with such details:
“A VR sickness reduction system, a head-mounted display, a VR sickness reduction method, and a program with which it is possible to further reduce VR sickness. An HMD (12) is provided with a display unit (38), which is disposed in front of the eyes of a user when the user wears the HMD (12). A shaking unit (42) can shake the head of the user wearing the HMD (12). An entertainment device (14) causes the display unit (38) to display a moving image representing a view as seen from a viewpoint. The entertainment device (14) controls the shaking of the shaking unit (42) in accordance with the acceleration condition of the viewpoint for the moving image displayed by the display unit (38). ”

But that’s not all, another patent for the Next-Gen VR was also revealed that provides us with details about the Tracker Calibration Device:
“Provided are a tracker calibration device, tracker calibration method, and program that make it possible to precisely calibrate a plurality of types of trackers without measuring the relative positions of the trackers beforehand. A tracker data acquisition unit (50) acquires a plurality of items of first tracker data indicating the position of a first tracker expressed using a first coordinate system. The tracker data acquisition unit (50) acquires a plurality of items of second tracker data indicating the position and orientation of a second tracker expressed using a second coordinate system. On the basis of the plurality of items of first tracker data and the plurality of items of second tracker data, a parameter estimation unit (58) estimates parameter values for converting the positions expressed using the second coordinate system into expressions in the first coordinate system and estimates the relative position of the second tracker in relation to the position of the first tracker.”
“It is necessary to perform calibration in advance so that the positions of the plurality of types of trackers can be expressed in one coordinate system. In addition, the calibration needs to be performed in a state where the relative positions and postures of the plurality of types of trackers are fixed.”
These new PlayStation VR patents will allow gamers a much more stable and optimized VR Gaming Experience. Unlike the recently revealed “feeling deduction” robot companion, this one doesn’t seem to be creepy or weird. From all the patents that are being revealed, Sony is really planning to blow minds once everything is officially revealed.
