Bungie may have hinted at the future of Destiny 2 until 2027 with its recent “Codename Frontiers” reveal, showing possible expansion plans for Years 12, and 13.

In June 2024, Bungie released a new video titled The Journey Ahead,” which gave us a glimpse of what’s coming in Destiny 2’s three episodes, Echoes, Revenant, and Heresy, set to release in the year of The Final Shape. At the end of the video, Bungie also teased Destiny 2: Codename Frontiers for 2025.

Fast forward to September 2024, Bungie finally shared more details about Frontiers with a series of blog articles digging into what players can expect in the future. This confirmed the reports that Destiny 2 is moving away from annual expansions to two smaller ones every year, each accompanied by two free major updates.

Following the announcement, many Destiny 2 fans began speculating about the game’s future and whether this new “two expansions per year” model would be a long-term approach. Now, we may finally have some clarity on how long Bungie plans to stick with this release structure.

Destiny 2 Codename Frontiers Hints At New Expansion Model Until 2027

If we look closer at the featured image of the Frontiers’ reveal article on the official Bungie website, we can see three prominent diamond-shaped nodestwo on the left and one on the right. Upon zooming in, the barely visible text “YR 12” appears near the right-side diamond, while “YR 13” is subtly positioned by the bottom-left diamond.

Interestingly, in the “The Journey Ahead” video, Bungie referred to 2025 as Destiny’s “Year 11” and toward the end of the video, as the logo for the mysterious “Codename Frontiers” appeared, a similar-looking diamond node was shown underneath it, flickering exactly three times.

This subtle visual clue seems to connect with the three diamond nodes visible in the banner image of Bungie’s recent blog post. The flickering might symbolize the three years—2025, 2026, and 2027—each represented by one of the nodes on the map, with “YR 12” and “YR 13” text further reinforcing that Bungie might continue the new expansion model for Destiny 2 until 2027, or that this is when the new “multi-year saga” might conclude.

  • Top-left node: Year 11 (2025)
  • Right node: Year 12 (2026)
  • Bottom-left node: Year 13 (2027)

It’s important to note that this is all speculation. Bungie has not officially confirmed that it will continue Destiny 2’s new two-expansions-per-year strategy through 2027.

According to Bungie, Codename Frontiers is how it is “describing major innovations coming to Destiny over the next few years starting with our next expansion, Codename: Apollo.”

Bungie has officially confirmed that Destiny 2’s next major “multi-year” saga will kick off with the first expansion in 2025, Codename Apollo. This expansion marks the beginning of a brand-new storyline for the franchise, following the conclusion of the Light and Darkness saga in The Final Shape.

“This next saga is also based around a core theme, much like Light and Darkness did,” said Alison Lührs, Destiny 2’s narrative director. “It will introduce plenty of new characters, factions, twists, and more. There’s a lot more here we will say eventually, but we don’t want to spoil the journey for you. This will be a multiyear journey, one we can’t wait to take you on.”

Earlier today, Bungie revealed some major changes coming to Destiny 2 with Codename Frontiers. The developer announced that it will be moving away from releasing two raids and two dungeons per year to just one raid and one dungeon annually, effectively halving the amount of end-game content players have become accustomed to in recent years.
