A new report claims Call of Duty 2026, likely Modern Warfare 4, will not support old-gen consoles and is being built specifically for the next Xbox.
It looks like Call of Duty is finally moving on from old hardware. A recent leak claims that Call of Duty 2026, which is expected to be Modern Warfare 4, won’t be coming to PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Instead, it’s being developed with next-gen Xbox dev kits, hinting that Microsoft’s new console could launch around the same time.
The leak, shared by TheGhostOfHope, also mentions some big changes. The game’s engine is getting overhauled to fix issues seen in Modern Warfare 2, like visual clutter that made enemies hard to spot. If true, this should be good news for players who weren’t happy with MW2’s design choices.
On top of that, the user interface (UI) is said to be more traditional, even more so than what’s coming in this year’s Black Ops 6. This leak lines up with earlier reports that Call of Duty 2025 will still support last-gen but will likely be the last to do so.
That means MW4 could be the first game in the series built entirely for newer hardware, likely making use of better graphics, improved performance, and maybe even new gameplay mechanics that weren’t possible on PS4 and Xbox One.
There’s also an interesting bit about Warzone’s future. According to the same leak, Warzone 3 might not happen at all if the return of Verdansk in 2025 doesn’t bring back enough players.
Activision is reportedly hoping for a huge wave of returning fans, similar to Fortnite’s OG event. If that doesn’t happen, they might rethink Warzone’s long-term plans.
Of course, nothing is official yet. Activision hasn’t said anything about Call of Duty 2026, let alone a next-gen Xbox. But if this leak is accurate, we could be looking at the first truly next-gen Call of Duty, one that leaves old consoles behind for good.
As always, we suggest taking everything with a grain of salt as neither Activision nor Microsoft has officially announced any plans for this title yet.
