Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii may have just let the cat out of the bag about a Chrono Trigger remake during a panel at Comicon Napoli.

If you’ve been following the rumors around a Chrono Trigger remake, you’re not alone. The 1995 Super Nintendo classic is still considered one of the best RPGs ever made, thanks to its lovable characters, clever time-travel storyline, and unforgettable music.

Fans have been asking for a modern remake for years, especially after Square Enix started remaking other older titles in fancy new styles, like Live A Live and Trials of Mana. Over time, whispers of a possible Chrono Trigger remake have started to sound a little more real, and now, something big may have just happened.

Did Yuji Horii Just Confirm Chrono Trigger Remake?

During Comicon Napoli in Italy, Dragon Quest creator and Chrono Trigger co-writer Yuji Horii appeared to drop a huge hint. According to a post on the ChronoTrigger subreddit, Horii mentioned something that sounded like confirmation of a remake during the panel.

A Reddit user described how, after Horii made the comment, the host quickly whispered something in his ear. That’s when Horii covered his mouth, as if he realized he wasn’t supposed to say anything. The audience caught on and cheered.

“The father of Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger let this information slip during an interview,” the post reads. “The host whispered something in his ear, and he covered his mouth. The audience went crazy.”

Another Reddit user who was in the crowd backed up the story. They recalled the interviewer reacting with surprise, saying something like, “Wait, if that’s true, this is big.” The translator even tried to brush it off by jokingly telling the crowd, “You have heard nothing.”

Update, May 2, 11:36 AM PT: Reddit user “Kaguya-Shinomiya_” has now shared video evidence of this conversation, which can be viewed below.

Put simply, it sounded like Horii accidentally confirmed a Chrono Trigger remake is real, and probably in the works. It wasn’t a formal announcement, but when two separate attendees describe the same moment the same way, it’s hard not to pay attention.

Of course, it’s still unofficial, so it’s smart to treat this as a “maybe” until Square Enix actually says something. In the meantime, it’s worth noting that Chrono Trigger recently passed 5 million units sold worldwide, according to Square Enix. That shows people still care about this game, maybe now more than ever.
