Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii has fans hopeful again after confirming he’s now considering a Chrono Trigger remake following years of demand.
It’s been three decades since Chrono Trigger first launched on the Super Nintendo, and fans still haven’t let go of the dream of a full remake. Over the years, requests have poured in to bring the beloved JRPG back with modern visuals, especially after the success of Square Enix’s HD-2D remakes. Now, those hopes may finally be getting somewhere.
During this year’s Comicon Napoli in Italy, fans initially thought Yuji Horii, creator of Dragon Quest and co-writer of Chrono Trigger, had accidentally revealed a remake was already in the works. While some of that excitement was later dismissed as a translation mix-up, a new interview has brought much-needed clarity and fuel to the fire.
Yuji Horii Says He’s Starting to “Contemplate” a Chrono Trigger Remake
Gamereactor, who were on-site at Comicon Napoli, had the chance to speak with Horii directly in a new interview. During the conversation, Horii addressed the ongoing demand for a remake. He explained that with all the attention the game still receives, and seeing how well other HD-2D remakes have done, he’s now personally thinking about the idea of doing something with Chrono Trigger again.
Speaking about the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger, he said:
“Yes, it is. It has been a long time. Yes, I want to do something,” Horii said. “Currently, Dragon Quest has seen III and I-II [HD-2D] remakes. I get a lot of requests for the remake of Chrono Trigger as well, and so I’m starting to contemplate on it.”
This is the first time Horii has publicly acknowledged that a remake is on his mind, directly referencing the success of Square Enix’s HD-2D titles. While nothing has been confirmed or announced yet, it’s clear that the idea is no longer just wishful thinking; it’s under serious consideration from one of the game’s original creators.
With Chrono Trigger recently surpassing 5 million units sold worldwide, the demand is clearly still there. Whether it becomes another HD-2D remake or something entirely new, one thing is clear: it will be some time before we see anything official.
