Bungie accidentally made the Dawning Event Card upgrade free in Destiny 2, allowing players to claim paid cosmetics for free.

The Dawning, Destiny 2’s annual holiday event, has returned, bringing its signature cookie-baking mechanics, challenges, and new cosmetics. Players can deliver cookies to NPCs and unlock rewards like the new celestial dragon-themed armor sets, sparrows, shaders, and more.

In addition to the paid cosmetic items in the Eververse store, each annual event also offers an Event Card, featuring objectives that grant currency, weapons, and an optional upgrade for 1,000 Silver ($10) that provides bonus cosmetics.

Unfortunately, Destiny 2 has been plagued with bugs and glitches for months. From weightgate perk issues to bugged items in activities, players have been vocal about the need for fixes.

Now, the Dawning Event has stumbled into its own issue, with a pricing glitch that gave players a taste of premium rewards for free.

Bungie Disables Dawning Event Card Upgrade

After today’s Dawning update went live, players noticed that the Event Card upgrade was available at no cost. Instead of requiring the usual 1,000 Silver, players could simply claim it for free and unlock its paid cosmetics.

Update, December 10, 1:28 PM: Bungie has shared an update stating that players who obtained the Upgraded Event Card for free will keep the paid rewards.

“We have identified the underlying issue impacting the price of the Dawning Event Card Upgrade. At this time, we are planning the following actions:

  • Players who obtained the Dawning Event Card Upgrade while it was incorrectly listed at no cost will keep it. Bank error in your favor – Happy Dawning!
  • We will be issuing a hotfix (timing TBD) to fix pricing issues on the Upgrade, which will unblock players from making progress on both the earned and upgrade tracks.
  • When resolved, players who wish to purchase the Dawning Event Card Upgrade may do so for 1,000 Silver.”

This quickly spread across social media and forums, as many took the opportunity to grab the upgrade. In response, Bungie disabled the entire Dawning Event Card. Here’s the statement the developer shared on the official Destiny 2 Team channels:

“We have identified an issue where the Dawning Event Card Upgrade could be acquired for less Silver than intended (None, whoops!). Until this issue is resolved, the Dawning Event Card Upgrade will not be available for purchase.

Players can still complete free event card triumphs and earn free rewards as expected. Once this issue is resolved, players will need to re-acquire the Dawning Event Card Upgrade for 1,000 Silver.”

Adding to the frustration, players found out that they couldn’t even view or complete the free Dawning Event Card triumphs. Bungie addressed this with another update:

“Due to disabling the Dawning Event Card, all Event Card Triumphs and progression are on hold until the main issue is resolved. We’ll provide updates once we have more information.”

This means players currently have no way to track their event progress or earn the rewards tied to these triumphs, leaving many disappointed with how the situation is being handled. Fans are understandably disappointed.

One Reddit user commented, “This game needs more goodwill, it would’ve been cool if it was just something just for Christmas.” Another added, “They could have generated a lot of goodwill with the player base if they just kept it open for all players.”

It’s unclear when exactly this bug will be fixed. For now, all we can do is wait.

What do you think about Bungie’s handling of this situation? Should Bungie have kept the upgrade free as a gesture of goodwill? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
