“A Destiny Story at Heart”: Bungie Clarifies Star Wars-Inspired Destiny 2 Renegades Expansion Is Fully Canon Following Immersion Concerns from Players

Bungie clears the air after mixed reactions to Destiny 2: Renegades, confirming it’s Star Wars-inspired but still true to Destiny’s universe.

When Bungie revealed Renegades, the second expansion in Destiny 2’s “Year of Prophecy” roadmap, it didn’t take long for opinions to flood in. The expansion’s flashy trailer featured what looked like lightsabers and even Star Wars-style sound effects. For many players, it immediately raised a red flag: Was Destiny turning into a full-on Star Wars crossover?

The reveal hit some longtime fans the wrong way. Some called it immersion-breaking. Others felt it was the latest example of a game trying too hard to cash in on recognizable pop culture, especially with a look that felt more like a cosplay convention than a natural part of Destiny’s world.

Renegades is a “Destiny Story with Destiny Characters,” Says Bungie

To clear things up, Bungie stepped in with some direct comments from its development team. Assistant Game Director Robbie Stevens addressed the concerns in a post on X (Twitter), saying:

“Rest assured, Guardians – everything in Renegades is in-canon for the Destiny universe, but we’re leaning into the aesthetic, tone, and vibe of Star Wars to tell a Destiny story with Destiny characters.”

So no, this isn’t Destiny 2 officially crossing over with Star Wars. You’re not going to see Darth Vader join the Vanguard (sure, there is a new Darth Vader armor set included in the Year of Prophecy Ultimate Edition). And Bungie isn’t trying to mash Disney’s universe into Destiny’s.

Instead, it is borrowing the look, feel, and energy of Star Wars, something the developer says has inspired their work since the Halo days, to tell a story that still takes place firmly in Destiny’s own world.

The official press release backs this up. It says that Renegades was “inspired by the legendary Star Wars universe,” but it emphasized that the expansion still keeps Destiny’s core intact. Destiny VP Justin Truman added:

“With each of our Fate Saga Expansions, we’re looking to break from our past formulas and deliver something truly unique, and Renegades is no exception. It’s a Destiny story at heart, but with a Star Wars-inspired take that’s been a dream for us to explore.”

In other words, Renegades isn’t about bringing Star Wars into Destiny, it’s about channeling the kind of atmosphere and themes Star Wars is known for to tell a new Destiny story, in Bungie’s own style.

Still, it’s hard to ignore just how strong the Star Wars influence is, not just in the Renegades expansion itself, but in the extras Bungie is offering. Players who pick up the Year of Prophecy Ultimate Edition will get access to a full lineup of Star Wars-inspired cosmetics. That includes armor sets based on some of the franchise’s most iconic characters:

  • Kylo Ren-themed armor
  • General Grievous-themed armor
  • Darth Vader-themed armor

Whether fans love it or hate it, Renegades launches December 2, 2025, and will be part of the Year of Prophecy content lineup alongside The Edge of Fate. Bungie is promising new story content, gear, a dungeon, and plenty of loot.
