Destiny 2’s latest update has caused unexpected Bungie Name changes, leaving players and streamers frustrated.

Earlier today, Bungie released a new update in Destiny 2 aimed at fixing some lingering bugs. However, the excitement of a potential fix for the Graviton Lance bug (unfortunately, it’s still not fixed) was quickly overshadowed by an unexpected issue that left many players and content creators confused and frustrated.

Shortly after the update went live, reports began flooding the Destiny subreddit and the official Bungie forums, with players noticing that their Bungie Name—an in-game identity they’ve held for years—had been changed without any warning.

The problem isn’t isolated to a few individuals. So far, dozens of players have reported this issue, and the impact has been widespread enough to catch the attention of prominent streamers and content creators in the Destiny 2 community.

Among those affected are Rick Kackis, and ZkMushroom, well-known Destiny content creators, who shared their frustration after discovering that his Bungie Name had been changed to the generic “Guardian” name.

Bungie’s Response on the Forums

While Bungie hasn’t addressed the issue on platforms like X (Twitter) via its BungieHelp or Destiny 2 Team accounts, it did provide a response on the official Bungie Forums.

A Bungie representative explained that names might be manually changed “by us at any point if it gets reported or caught in the name filter,” which could also use up any available name change tokens. Unfortunately, the response provided little insight into why specific names were altered, leaving players in the dark.

The full response from Bungie can be found below:

“Thanks for reaching out. Please note that your Bungie name may be manually changed by us at any point if it gets reported or caught in the name filter. This can use up any available name change tokens. Beyond that, we’re unfortunately unable to provide more insight as to why your name was changed. Please feel free to check out our Bungie Name Guide and name policies at the bottom of the article for more info!”

While Bungie’s name policies are in place to filter out offensive or inappropriate content, it seems that some very casual and non-offensive names have also been caught in the crossfire. One Reddit user replied, “My name is changed and it wasn’t offensive. In fact it’s my username here [Todd-dax]. It’s slightly irritating but hopefully, they let us change it back.”

The sudden name changes have left many players scrambling for answers, and the lack of immediate communication from Bungie has only fueled their frustration. As of now, Bungie has yet to acknowledge the issue on social media, further adding to the confusion.

We will update this article once we receive an official statement from Bungie regarding this matter.
