Here’s everything revealed during today’s Destiny 2 Renegades and Ash & Iron update developer livestream.

Renegades is Destiny 2’s next big expansion, and during today’s developer livestream, we’re finally getting our first proper look at it. The expansion is set to release on December 2, 2025. It’s the first-ever Destiny expansion to be a crossover with another IP, and it’s none other than Star Wars, with full Lucasfilm licensing. We’ve already gotten some early teasers, including Lightsabers, some in-game lore hints about where we might be headed, and more.

The stream also walks us through Ash & Iron, a first major update that releases today. Bungie has already revealed that players will return to the Plaguelands, a beloved location from Rise of Iron. There is also a new Axe weapon type coming to the game. Similar to previous content releases, Ash & Iron also brings tons of balance changes, including Exotic weapons, armor, and abilities changes.

We’ll be updating this post live as new details are shared.

Destiny 2 Renegades – Everything Revealed

Destiny 2 Renegades leans hard into a space-western caper with an official Lucasfilm Games collaboration. Bungie describes it as finding the overlap between Destiny and Star Wars: underdogs, hope, and big forces moving in the background, while keeping it firmly Destiny. In the devs’ words, Renegades “brings the grit, guns, and glory of the space Western to Destiny.”

Renegades also draws clear parallels between Destiny factions and familiar Star Wars archetypes. According to Bungie, the Dredgen represent the Sith, the new Cabal faction: the Barant Imperium mirrors the Empire, and the Praxic Order are the Jedi of the Destiny universe.

New Activity: Lawless Frontier

Lawless Frontier is the new game mode coming with Renegades. This is the main activity that you can launch from a Holomap. You pick a location (from Mars, Venus, and Europa), pick a job, choose which Renegade abilities to bring, then drop in solo or matchmade.

Each job plays out differently, with shifting locations, objective types, and even time-of-day changes. Clear the boss, call your ship, and exfil before the clock runs out.

Here’s what we currently know about the Lawless Frontier activity:

  • Select a location: Mars, Venus, or Europa
  • Select Job Type: Bounty Hunt, Sabotage, or Smuggle
  • Select Target: Cabal, Vex, or Fallen

Invasion in Lawless Frontier:

Bungie has also confirmed that the Invasion mechanic is coming back in Destiny 2: Renegades, but it’s not the same as Gambit’s old format. Instead, this new version is baked directly into the Lawless Frontier endgame loop and offers a more strategic, opt-in feature on Guardian-versus-Guardian encounters.

Invasion is a 1v3 PvPvE mechanic where one player (the invader) is contracted by a syndicate to act as a hitman against another fireteam. It takes place in the Lawless Frontier, the new activity launching with Renegades, which spans Mars, Europa, and Venus.

Bungie made it clear that Invasion is fully opt-in for both the invader and the fireteam being targeted. You will have different difficulty modes and options available, so if you don’t want to deal with Invasion at all, you won’t be forced into it.

New Renegade Abilities

Bungie has confirmed that Renegades will introduce brand-new abilities in Destiny 2 called “Renegades Abilities”, but these aren’t subclass-based powers. Instead, players will unlock them through the new campaign and post-game activities. These abilities are things like airstrikes, Cabal drop-pods, turrets, and even vehicles including the Cabal Walker, Interceptors, and Swoop Bikes.

There are three different types of Renegades abilities: Vehicle, Defense, and Offense. There are two Vehicle abilities, four Defensive abilities, and three offensive abilities. We’re talking about things like airstrikes, Cabal drop-pods, turrets, and even vehicles including the Cabal Walker, interceptors, and swoop bikes.

The devs confirmed there are nine base Renegade abilities with seven upgrade paths.

Tharsis Outpost: Black Market Hub

The old Tharsis Junction is now Tharsis Outpost, a full-on social space where players interact with underground factions and shady characters. This is where you’ll grab contracts, manage reputation, and meet new allies, or potential rivals.

New Syndicates In Renegades

Renegades adds multiple syndicates, each with their own personality and rewards. Players will build up notoriety with them over time, sometimes by helping them out, other times by working against their interests. Bungie introduced three during the ViDoc:

  • The Pikers (Eliksni): An “anarchist biker gang“: Atheists who don’t worship machines; they follow Riliks.
  • Totality Division (Barant Imperium subset): Psion-run, with Rao as the enforcer/lead of this group.
  • Tharsis Reformation (Vex): A “breakaway group of Maya’s Vex

Progression & endgame loop

Instead of focusing purely on raw power, Renegades shifts the grind toward influence. As you complete jobs, you earn notoriety with different factions, unlocking new job tiers, better loot, and a “special job” that will take players off-planet to a brand-new dungeon.

Bungie hinted that some of the highest-tier content may only be accessible through these underground channels.

Destiny 2 Renegades New Dungeon Launch

Bungie has officially confirmed that the new dungeon coming withe Renegades is currently planned to launch in the second week of the expansion, that is likely going to be on Saturday, December 13, 2025.

The highlight of the update is Reclaim, a new three‑player activity set in the Plaguelands, that takes inspiration from the Overthrow activity. It’s not on a timer, so you can take your time or speed through.

There are also some new weapons shown during the livestream, including a new MIDA shotgun, new Crossbow, two brand-new exotic weapons: a Rocket frame Pulse rifle, and the Wolfsbane Axe, that will be available as part of the new Exotic mission launching next month.

Bungie has also confirmed that Iron Banner will return next week in Destiny 2. After that Arms Week will begin with a focus on shotguns.
