GTA 6’s release date speculation heats up as industry insider suggests a potential delay to 2026.
If there’s one game that has the industry holding its breath, it’s Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6 (and Nintendo Switch 2). As fans eagerly anticipate what could be the most ambitious entry yet in the iconic series, rumors and speculation about the release date are piling up.
While Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, maintains a projected launch for fall 2025, a recent comment from Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier has cast doubt on that timeline.
During a discussion on the Kinda Funny Games Daily earlier today, Schreier suggested that the game might not make its 2025 debut and that personally speaking, could be delayed into 2026.
Considering Rockstar’s reputation for taking its time—and the stakes involved in launching a game of this magnitude—his statement has fueled conversations about the road to release for GTA 6.
GTA 6 Likely Delayed to 2026?
Speaking on the podcast, Schreier shared his personal take on GTA 6’s Fall 2025 release and explained why he believes a delay is likely. He cited Rockstar’s history of delays as a key reason for his skepticism, recalling how Red Dead Redemption 2 was pushed multiple times before its eventual release in 2018.
“I would be shocked if [Grand Theft Auto 6] actually made it next year. I think that it will probably slip again because Rockstar’s games always slip.
“… Red Dead Redemption 2 would slip to Spring 2018 and then Fall 2018. And that was six years ago—games are even more complicated, even more moving pieces now, slipping even further now.
“So, I would be shocked if it doesn’t slip to 2026. As of right now, Take-Two is saying that they are on track, we’ll if that’s still the case in a few months.”
This uncertainty is reportedly having ripple effects throughout the industry. A recent report from Schreier suggests rival publishers are strategically planning their release schedules to avoid launching games around GTA 6’s anticipated Fall 2025 release.
“Anticipation is so high that some competing game publishers are waiting as long as possible to commit to their release dates for the fall,” the report states. “The publishers want to see whether GTA 6 will make its deadline or slip into 2026, these people say, and they’re determined to keep their own games far, far away.”
