Bungie is reportedly planning a Marathon announcement for April 2025 with its own dedicated showcase.
Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter Marathon has been the subject of much anticipation ever since its official reveal in May 2023. With the studio known for its work on Destiny and the original Halo trilogy, fans have been waiting to see what Bungie can bring to the extraction shooter genre.
But despite all the excitement, Bungie has kept gameplay details under wraps, leaving fans waiting for an official showcase. Many were hoping to see something during PlayStation’s State of Play earlier this week, but that didn’t happen.
Instead of getting a first look at Marathon’s gameplay, the PlayStation event came and went without a mention of the game. Now, a reliable source has claimed that Bungie might be planning a dedicated showcase for Marathon.
Marathon Might Get Its Own Showcase in April 2025?
According to Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb, Marathon wasn’t shown at the State of Play because Bungie is planning to announce more about the game separately. Grubb shared this information on the latest Game Mess Decides episode, where he discussed upcoming PlayStation plans and Bungie’s strategy for revealing Marathon.
Grubb explained that Bungie will follow its traditional approach, similar to how it handles Destiny 2 updates. Rather than relying on PlayStation’s marketing, the studio is expected to host its own showcase, allowing it to fully control how Marathon is presented to the public.
“Marathon wasn’t [at PlayStation State of Play] because they’re probably going to do their own thing, said Grubb. “Bungie does their own thing usually for Destiny, and they’re going to adopt that same ‘we’re talking to our audience’ strategy this year as well. So I think April, we probably hear from them about Marathon, and it would just be its own thing separate from the State of Play.”
While Bungie hasn’t confirmed this yet, the idea of a dedicated showcase makes sense. The studio has been conducting Marathon playtests with streamers and content creators for months. Last year, The Game Post reported that the game is expected to launch at a $40 price point, rather than the free-to-play model many expected.
On top of that, Marathon pre-orders might be closer than people think. Bungie is slowly adding Marathon-related items in Destiny 2. Last year, a text string was found in the game files for Marathon pre-orders, set during Episode Heresy.
Now, with the launch of Heresy, Bungie appears to have added a new Marathon-themed Sparrow (UESC), which is likely a pre-order bonus for Destiny players. But, as with all rumors, we suggest taking everything with a grain of salt until officially confirmed.
