Marathon Symbiosis update brings permanent PvE, experimental TDM, Bishop, a rebuilt Perimeter, new onboarding, and a social hub in December.
Marathon’s December Symbiosis update will add the game’s first permanent PvE mode, giving players somewhere to explore Tau Ceti IV without hostile Runners hunting them. Bungie is also adding an experimental Team Deathmatch mode, rebuilding Perimeter, adding a new shell, and reworking how new players enter the game.
Symbiosis is the first large step in Bungie’s plan to broaden Marathon beyond its launch extraction genre. The studio says the December additions will become foundations for a much larger change planned for March 2027, when its different PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences are expected to connect more closely.

December is where players get their first hands-on look at that direction.
Marathon Symbiosis Update Brings PvE, TDM, Bishop, and More
Bungie confirmed in its Future of Marathon blog that Symbiosis will introduce a permanent dedicated PvE experience. Players will be able to experiment with builds, explore, and tackle challenges without worrying about another Runner ending the run. Bungie is still finalizing parts of the mode, so a fuller breakdown will arrive closer to release.
Competitive players are getting something new as well. Symbiosis adds an experimental Team Deathmatch mode designed around shorter, lower-commitment matches where gear from a full extraction run isn’t on the line.
Bungie plans to use player engagement with TDM to decide how direct competitive modes develop from here.

Perimeter is also getting a substantial rebuild. A fungal ecosystem is spreading across the map, changing familiar areas and opening new routes. Bungie says the zone will receive new points of interest and more difficult locations similar to Pinwheel on Outpost and Upper Complex on Night Marsh, with higher-tier rewards attached to the harder encounters.
The biggest addition to Perimeter is the Tick Queen, a “pinnacle encounter” that Bungie calls its largest combatant yet. Developer footage shows the creature using a biological immobilization attack, with its throat and mouth lighting up before it spits the effect. Bungie says the encounter is being designed around crews working together against a much larger PvE threat.

Symbiosis also introduces Bishop, a new shell Bungie describes as a “high-performance robot samurai.” Bishop is built around speed, surprise, and short bursts of melee damage, giving crews another specialized role to build around.
New players are getting a different starting experience too. Bungie says, “Marathon currently asks new players to learn too much, too quickly.” Symbiosis will rework onboarding and add a CyAc-sponsored social space with a firing range where players can meet, prepare, test weapons and abilities, and learn their shell before heading deeper into Tau Ceti IV.
The Developer Insights footage also shows an introductory contract involving UESC communication towers. Bungie wants the damage caused during that mission to remain visible when players later return to Perimeter, giving the onboarding mission a lasting effect on the space.

Symbiosis arrives in December 8, with Bungie promising a deeper look at the permanent PvE experience before the update launches.
