A new Greek God of War game was reportedly in development, but a trusted insider now claims it’s been pushed back to 2026.
It’s no secret that God of War fans have been begging Sony Santa Monica for years to bring back Kratos’ brutal adventures from the Greek era. While the Norse saga has been a huge success, a big part of the fanbase has been hoping for a return to where it all started, Mount Olympus, Ares, and the chaotic beginnings of Kratos’ story.
On top of that, there’s been a strong push from the community for a full remaster of the original Greek trilogy. Lately, those hopes were reignited thanks to multiple reports about a brand-new God of War project set in Greece.
Unlike a remaster, this was said to be a completely new game, smaller in scale, different in style, and possibly exploring parts of Kratos’ past we’ve never seen before. But if you were hoping to get your hands on it this year, there’s some disappointing news.
New Greek God of War Game Delayed?
According to well-known industry insider and journalist Jeff Grubb, the upcoming Greek-themed God of War game is no longer targeting a 2025 release. Speaking during a latest episode of Game Mess, his regular video podcast, Grubb shared that the game has been pushed back internally and is now expected in 2026.
This new God of War game isn’t a full-scale AAA sequel like Ragnarök, but instead a smaller side project with a different gameplay style, rumored to be 2.5D and Metroidvania-inspired. Some leaks even mentioned that it might take place before Kratos became the Ghost of Sparta, possibly featuring his brother Deimos as well.
“The unannounced new God of War Greek project, which I heard, was pushed into 2026,” Grubb said.
While this isn’t an official announcement from Sony or Santa Monica Studio, Jeff Grubb has a solid track record with behind-the-scenes information, so there’s a good chance this timeline is accurate.
That said, it’s always best to treat early development updates like this with a bit of caution, especially when nothing has been confirmed publicly.
