Industry analyst predicts that the Nintendo Switch 2 will sell 6 million units in its first quarter, surpassing the PS5’s launch numbers.
Nintendo fans have been waiting a long time for the next big thing, and now it’s almost here. Earlier this year, the company officially revealed the first look at the new Nintendo Switch 2 console, with a full Switch 2 Direct confirmed later in 2025. Excitement is through the roof, with fans and industry experts alike eager to see what the successor to one of the best-selling consoles of all time has to offer.
And if predictions are correct, it’s not just excitement that’s building, it’s massive sales numbers too. Analysts believe the Switch 2 is going to blow past the PlayStation 5’s launch sales, with a staggering 6 million units expected to be sold in its first quarter.
Industry Expert Predicts Huge First-Quarter Sales for Nintendo Switch 2
This bold projection comes from Hideki Yasuda, an analyst at Toyo Securities. In a recent report by the Japanese GamesIndustry.biz website, Yasuda claimed that Nintendo is preparing a huge stockpile of Switch 2 units ahead of launch, making sure there’s more than enough to meet demand.
Yasuda believes this preparation will give the console a major advantage. He estimates that if the Switch 2 launches in July 2025, its first three months on the market could see it move 6 million units, a number that would put it well ahead of the PS5’s 4.5 million sales in the same timeframe.
This approach is a direct challenge to Sony’s PlayStation 6, which isn’t expected for a few more years. Yasuda believes that Nintendo wants to get ahead of Sony early, creating a situation where PlayStation simply can’t catch up.
“If Nintendo executes this plan successfully, this could completely shatter the industry’s widespread belief that game consoles must be released during the year-end sales season to succeed.,” Yasuda stated. (machine translated)
For reference, the original Nintendo Switch sold 2.74 million units in its first quarter back in 2017. The PlayStation 5, which launched during a supply chain crisis, still managed 4.5 million sales in its first three months. But if Nintendo’s 6 million projection holds, it would set a new industry record for a non-holiday console launch.
While Nintendo hasn’t officially revealed the Switch 2’s launch lineup, leaks suggest every major developer is considering Switch 2 for their next AAA title. In addition to that, recent reports also suggest that some big Xbox games might be coming to Switch 2 after launch.
These include Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Diablo 4, A Call of Duty game, Fallout 4 , and Starfield.
