Microsoft has officially released the complete specifications for its next-gen console – Xbox Series X. One of the major features in next-gen consoles is – Backward Compatibility. While Sony’s PlayStation 5 will only feature the top 100 titles at launch, Microsoft has commented that Xbox Series X will feature its entire previous Xbox library. On top of that, Backward Compatibility on XSX also comes with an additional feature – HDR support.

In an interview with Digital Foundry, Microsoft’s software engineer Claude Marais talked about how Xbox Series X supports HDR mode to previous Xbox titles that don’t have HDR mode built-in. “It can be applied to all games theoretically, technically, I guess we’re still working through user experiences and things like that but this is a technical demo,” said Marais. “So this [Halo 5] is four years old, right, so let’s go to the extreme and jump to a game that is 19, 20 years old right now – and that is Fusion Frenzy. Back then there’s nothing known about HDR, no-one knew about HDR things. Games just used 8-bit back buffers.”

Marias then continued talking about the accessibility of Xbox Series X and how the console comes with a feature for someone who is colorblind. “Let’s look at accessibility. If you have people that cannot read well or see well, you probably want to enhance contrast when there’s a lot of text on-screen,” Marais told DF. “We can easily do that. We talked to someone that’s colorblind this morning and that’s a great example. We just switch on the LUT and we can change colors for them to more easily experience the announcement there.”

Apart from that, we have some rumors about another next-gen console from Microsoft that’s codenamed – Project Lockhart or Xbox Series S. Here’s everything we know about it. We can’t wait to get our hands on XSX. What are your expectations for the XSX game library? Let us know in the comments!

Xbox Series X will be out holidays 2020.
