Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon, is getting a lot of attention after new Steam updates hinted at pre-orders and multiple editions.
Bungie’s next big project, Marathon, has been a hot topic ever since its reveal in 2023. The game, a class-based extraction shooter, is expected to be a major departure from Destiny 2 while still keeping Bungie’s gameplay feel. Fans have been waiting for official updates, and while Bungie has been pretty quiet, there have been some small glimpses, like the developer update last October.
But beyond Bungie’s official updates, dataminers have found a new Marathon-themed cosmetic in Destiny 2‘s game files that was added with the launch of Episode Heresy, possibly as a pre-order bonus for Marathon. Now, an even bigger find, new Steam database updates suggest that pre-orders could be just around the corner.
New Marathon Steam Updates Hint at Editions and Pre-Orders
Over the past few days, Marathon’s Steam app has been receiving constant updates, leading many to believe that Bungie is preparing for an official announcement. Now, a moderator from the SteamDB Discord, who goes by LifeisDeckard, has taken a closer look at these updates.
According to their findings, it appears Bungie is setting up multiple editions of the game, along with DLC that could be tied to pre-orders.
Here’s what was found:
- Three Editions of Marathon:
- Pre-Order Bonus DLCs (3569720 & 3569730) included with every edition
- Extra+ DLCs (3569760)
- Extra++ DLC (3569740 & 3569750)
- A Destiny 2-related DLC (2978290) included with every edition
This could mean that an announcement about Marathon’s pre-orders isn’t too far off. it’s worth noting that this is based on speculation. As with any rumors, it’s important to remember that nothing is official until Bungie confirms it. Plans can always change, and so, we suggest taking everything with a grain of salt.
Another recent report suggested that Bungie might be planning a dedicated Marathon showcase in April 2025. If that turns out to be true, it would be the perfect time to announce pre-orders officially.
Bungie has already confirmed that the game will not follow the traditional hero-shooter format, where you select a hero and your entire kit is assigned. Instead, there will be “a lot of freedom to choose what weapons, implants, upgrades, and consumables you bring in,” the developer says.
