Nintendo Switch 2 has officially launched, and reports claim its first-day sales have set a new console record, with demand at an all-time high.
Nintendo has officially launched the Switch 2, and to say it’s been a huge week would be an understatement. Fans from around the world lined up, pre-ordered, and in some cases, camped outside stores just to get their hands on Nintendo’s next-gen console. With major new games launching alongside it and the promise of new adventures, excitement has been through the roof.
The demand was obvious from day one. Retailers sold out almost instantly in many regions, and it quickly became clear that Nintendo was dealing with a launch bigger than anything they’d seen before. While the company hasn’t released official sales numbers yet, early reports suggest that the Switch 2’s launch might be in a league of its own.
Nintendo Switch 2 Launch Day Sales
So, how big was the Switch 2’s launch? According to new information shared by a well-known Nintendo YouTuber on X (Twitter), Nintendo Prime, Nintendo has sold over 3 million Switch 2 units worldwide in the first 24 hours. That number comes from three independent sources, according to the post
For comparison, the previous record for first-day console sales was held by the PlayStation 4, which moved just over 1 million units globally in its first 24 hours. The Switch 2’s reported 3 million units more than triples that milestone.
Not only that, but the all-time record for two-month sales after a console launch is about 4.5 million units (held by both PS5 and PS4). With the pace Nintendo is setting, the Switch 2 could surpass that record in less than a week.
“I have now heard from 3 independent people that Nintendo has globally shifted over 3m Switch 2 units,” the post reads. “This doesn’t include any additional sales made today already and over the upcoming weekend.”
Of course, it’s important to remember that these numbers haven’t been confirmed by Nintendo, so take them with a grain of salt. Still, the signs all point to a launch that’s bigger than anything we’ve seen in the gaming industry before.
Analysts had already predicted huge things for the Switch 2, with some forecasting sales of 20 million units in its first year alone.
