‘Mistakes Were Made’: Bungie Apologizes for Destiny 2 Armor 3.0 Stats Bug In Edge of Fate, Promises to ‘Make It Right Quickly’

Bungie admits to mistakes with Destiny 2’s new Armor 3.0 stats after the Edge of Fate launch, promising a fast fix coming soon.

Destiny 2’s latest expansion, Edge of Fate, released last week, bringing with it a huge overhaul of the core game systems, one of which is how armor stats work in the game. Bungie introduced the new “Armor 3.0” system, giving players more control over their builds. This was one of the expansion’s headline features (among the Portal and gear tiering system), with new archetypes and set bonuses.

Here’s how it was supposed to work: according to Bungie’s patch notes and pre-release previews, getting to 70 in any given ability stat (like Discipline, Strength, or the new Class stat) would be equal to hitting 100 in the old system. And if you went above 70, you’d get even faster recharge times than before. It was meant to make high-stat investment actually feel meaningful, with more satisfying returns for your build choices.

But once players got their hands on the new armor system, it didn’t take long to notice that something was off. Cooldowns and energy gains weren’t matching what Bungie promised. Days after the expansion launch, a Destiny 2 player, engineeeeer7, did an in-depth analysis showing that the new numbers didn’t add up.

Destiny 2 Armor 3.0 Stats Bug Explained

According to the post, grenade and melee ability cooldowns at the lowest stats still start at the same point as before. But as you invest more into your armor stats, the benefits drop off compared to what Bungie showed.

We were shown (in the Edge of Fate previews) that grenade and melee abilities would hit the old “base” cooldown at 30 stat, and max out at a 3.0x regen speed at 100 stat, meaning your abilities would come back much quicker than ever before. In reality, though, the numbers in-game aren’t lining up.

Right now, grenade and melee cooldowns only hit the old base level at 44 stat (instead of 30), and even if you max out to 100 stat, you only get a 2.0x regen speed, not the 3.0x we saw in previews. That means your abilities are recharging slower than expected, especially if you’ve been chasing those top-tier stat builds.

Engineeeeer7 also tested energy gains from perks like Demolitionist, Pugilist, and Strategist have also taken a hit. At 0 stat, you’re only getting about 40% of the energy you used to get. At 100 stat, you get 116% of the old value, which sounds like a buff, but Bungie’s previews suggested you could get as high as 130.5%.

Even more confusing, you now need 87 stat just to get the same energy gain you had at the old 100 stat, when Bungie previously said 70 stat would be enough.

Here’s a quick overview in bullet points:

In Bungie’s previews:

  • Grenade and melee cooldowns:
    • At 0 stat: 0.7x regen speed (slowest)
    • At 30 stat: 1.0x regen speed (normal)
    • At 76 stat: 2.0x regen speed (matches old 100 stat)
    • At 100 stat: 3.0x regen speed (faster than before)
  • Energy gains:
    • At 0 stat: 40–45%
    • At 100 stat: around 116% to 130.5%

Post-launch Edge of Fate values:

  • Grenade and melee cooldowns:
    • At 0 stat: 0.7x regen speed (same as before, except Hunter dodge)
    • At 30 stat: 0.84x regen speed (worse than before)
    • At 44 stat: 1.0x regen speed (now the “normal”)
    • At 100 stat: 2.0x regen speed (not as fast as what was previewed)
  • Energy gains:
    • At 0 stat: only 40% of the old value
    • At 87 stat: you get back to 100% of the old value
    • At 100 stat: only 116% of the old value (less than Bungie’s previews)

Bungie Responds to Armor 3.0 Stat Bug in Destiny 2: Edge of Fate

After thousands of upvotes on this analysis on Reddit, Bungie has now spoken up about the issue. The Destiny 2 Team posted a detailed message on X (Twitter), confirming that the Armor 3.0 system isn’t working the way it was supposed to.

According to Bungie, the new system is currently giving out less ability energy at all stat levels than what was stated in their earlier communications. The main problem is that 70 stat is not actually matching the old 100 stat, as Bungie had claimed. Instead, players are only getting the old max recharge rates at 85 stat or above.

The Destiny 2 Team’s full statement can be found below.

“We’ve been investigating reports that ability regen was not recharging at the rates communicated in a previous TWID following the 9.0.0.1 update. Many thanks to our community sleuths who discovered this issue and brought it to our attention. Right now, the ability stats (Grenade, Melee, Class, and Super) are returning less ability energy than stated in our previous communications.

“We had previously stated that hitting 70 in an ability stat in the Edge of Fate was equivalent to pre-Edge of Fate values (for Discipline, Strength, each class’s ability regen stat, and Intellect), and that going above 70 stat would result in faster recharging than before. This isn’t currently true for the 70 stat mark but the 85 stat mark, and we intend to make it true for 70 stat in an upcoming patch.

“Our design goal for the Edge of Fate stats is to let players be able to reach higher heights than previously possible in the game by investing heavier into specific stats, but also have interesting tradeoffs when making build crafting choices. Making 70 stat one of the big tradeoff points is important for our design goals and for meeting player expectations for buildcrafting in the Edge of Fate.

“A full breakdown of how the stats are being corrected will be shared in the accompanying patch notes (above is the simplified version). Suffice it to say, mistakes were made and we’re sorry for the accidental confusion here. We intend to make it right quickly. Once again, we appreciate the members of the community who noticed this discrepancy and pushed it forward for our attention.”
