Destiny 2 Renegades brings a Gambit-inspired Invasion system to the new Lawless Frontier activity, and Bungie is already eyeing it as a core feature for future Destiny content.

We’re less than five days away from the launch of Renegades, the next big Destiny 2 expansion, which launches on December 2, 2025. In this Star Wars-inspired expansion, players will be running jobs for syndicates across Mars, Venus, and Europa, with new Blaster weapons, the Praxic Blade, and a heavy focus on co-op play.

At the center of all that is Lawless Frontier, a new three-player activity built around “high-risk jobs” like smuggling and bounty hunts. Buried inside it is something very familiar to long-time players, an updated version of Gambit’s Invasion mechanic, now turned into a full opt-in PvPvE system.

Instead of invading another team’s bank match, you either agree to let an invader drop into your job or you become the invader yourself.

How Invasion works in Destiny 2 Lawless Frontier Activity

Once you unlock Invasion in Renegades, Lawless Frontier gives you two ways to play around it. You can take on “high-risk jobs” as a three-person fireteam, where another Guardian might break into your run. Or you can queue up as an Invader, get dropped into someone else’s job, and play the role of the hunter instead.

When an Invasion starts, the defending team gets a warning that an enemy Guardian has entered the area. From that moment, the job becomes a lot more stressful. You’re not just trying to finish your contract and make it to extraction; you’re trying to survive another player who is there for one purpose: take you out.

The invader has a very straightforward goal: get kills to earn credits. If the defending team manages to take out the invader before that happens, the invader fails and is removed from the mission.

It ends up feeling like the best part of Gambit’s Invasion, but without the mote bank mini game attached. You’re already fighting enemies and trying to reach extraction, and on top of that, you have this roaming threat that can completely flip a run if you’re not ready for it.

Now, according to Destiny 2 game director Tyson Green, this whole new Invasion system isn’t just a one-off gimmick. Bungie is treating it as a real experiment for the future of the series.

In a new interview with Japanese outlet EAA FPS, Green explained that the team treated the Invasion system as a test bed for the future. The idea is to give players control over how much danger they want to take on, and reward them properly if they decide to accept that pressure.

In practice, Bungie is experimenting with a very different kind of PvPvE. Instead of the old “bank and invade” loop from Gambit, Invasion in Renegades is built around job-based missions where you decide upfront if you’re willing to risk another Guardian dropping into your run.

Bungie wants to see if this style of “your choice, your risk, your payout” can become a long-term foundation for PvE content, not just something tucked inside one expansion.

“The Invasion system could become a core part of future Destiny experiences,” Green said. “We really like the idea of players choosing their difficulty and risk, and, so to speak, putting some skin in the game by staking their rewards.” (machine translated)

However, this depends on how well it’s received in the Renegades expansion.

“But first, we want to see how it plays out. If players really like it, you’ll probably see more of it in the future, and if it isn’t received that well, it may remain an experimental element that exists only in Renegades.”

In other words, Bungie is testing a new way to approach future PvE activities in Destiny: you choose how much risk you want, your rewards are more clearly tied to that risk, and PvP only shows up if you turn it on. If players like it, this could be the start of a new direction for PvE activities, starting with Renegades and possibly future content too.

Speaking of the future, recent reports claim that Destiny 3 has entered extremely early development at Bungie. On top of that, the upcoming Shadow & Order major update will reportedly bring back three vaulted raid bosses for the Pantheon-like event: Insurrection Prime, Gahlran, and Val Ca’uor.
