Bungie has revealed some new details about Destiny 2, confirming that the future twice-a-year expansions will be similar in size to Destiny 1’s Rise of Iron expansion.
Big changes are coming to Destiny 2 in 2025. Bungie recently revealed that the game will adopt a new model, releasing two “medium-sized” expansions each year instead of one large annual expansion.
With Codenamed Frontiers, these expansions are set to evolve the game’s storytelling and gameplay in ways that feel fresh and more frequent for players. Last month, Bungie explained this shift in a developer insights article: “Starting next year, instead of one big Expansion, we are going to deliver two medium-sized Expansions, one every six months.”
These expansions will move away from the linear campaign structure Destiny 2 players have been used to, dating back to 2019’s Shadowkeep. Instead, Bungie promises new formats, which include non-linear campaigns and new gameplay systems.
Bungie Clarifies Destiny 2 Codename Frontiers Expansion Size
During the Episode Revenant developer livestream, Destiny 2 assistant game director, Robbie Stevens, shared more details about the new expansion model arriving with Codename Frontiers in 2025. According to Stevens, the new expansions will be similar in size to Destiny 1’s Rise of Iron.
“[Destiny 2] expansions are changing going forward with Codename Frontiers,” Stevens said. “Our philosophy behind this is, moving from one really big, all-consuming, tentpole moment, that kind of takes all the oxygen in the room at one point in the year, to two what we consider, big tentpole moments happening in each year.”
“To answer your question directly, the way we’re looking at the size of these is similar to Rise of Iron from Destiny 1, but this is happening like twice a year as compared to the past.” In Codename Apollo, the first expansion under the Frontiers banner, players will experience a completely new “Metroidvania-inspired destination.”
According to Stevens, this location will feature a non-linear campaign, where players are in control, freely exploring the world and piecing together its story at their own pace.
“This is very different from the past,” Stevens explained, “where you’re kind of following a very linear mission structure or line.” This change shifts the narrative approach, allowing players to engage more deeply with the world and its secrets.
Apart from that, Bungie has also announced that there will only be one raid and one dungeon coming to Destiny 2 moving forward. Here’s everything you need to know about this change.
