After banning hundreds of cheaters from Destiny 2’s Desert Perpetual raid, Bungie is now responding to new claims of a so-called “unban feature,” calling it fake and photoshopped.
Cheating in Destiny 2 has been a major point of frustration for both Bungie and the community. During the Desert Perpetual Contest Mode raid, data showed that more than half of the clears were suspicious, with some teams finishing in less than 20 minutes when the first legitimate clear took over 15 hours. Bungie followed up with a massive ban wave, removing players who cheated or even benefited from cheating teammates.
Now, the conversation has shifted to something even more bizarre: claims that banned players somehow found a way to “unban” themselves. One Destiny 2 player took to social media saying they could reverse bans, but Bungie quickly stepped in to shut it down.
Bungie responds to “unban feature” claims, says cheaters are still banned
It all started when a Destiny 2 player tagged the official Destiny 2 Team account on X (formerly Twitter), sharing a video of themselves playing against a cheater. Bungie responded directly, confirming action had already been taken on that specific account by replying: “This account has been actioned.“
But then another account, under the handle JudgmentRusted, jumped into the conversation, and that’s when things got out of hand. The user openly mocked Bungie, saying they were still cheating, had a working “unban feature,” and claimed Bungie’s anti-cheat system was ineffective. They even attached a screenshot showing a Twitch livestream with Destiny 2 running in the background and a cheat menu visible on-screen.
“Why [are] you lying. I’m not banned, and I’m still cheating,” the reply reads. “Your anti-cheat is so bad that even if you do ban me, I have an unban feature that unbans me. I’m still in [the] game right now. [At this point] just take the loss. Y’all can’t stop cheating in this game.”
Bungie wasn’t having it. It directly replied to the post, confirming that the team had investigated the accounts in question and found “no proof” of any new cheat that could unban banned Destiny 2 accounts. According to Bungie, these players were already banned “days, weeks, or months ago, and we’ve found that they are still banned today and cannot access the game.”
Check out the full response from Bungie below:
“We have become aware of claims that there is a new cheat that acts as an ‘unban’ button. Through investigation of reported accounts, we have found no proof of this being true. The accounts were banned days, weeks, or months ago, and we’ve found that they are still banned today and cannot access the game.
“This looks to be a simple Photoshop created to rile players up and further undermine trust in our attempts to combat cheaters. The team is continuing to monitor and review claims such as these, but we have found no proof that previously banned accounts can once again access the game.”
This comes just weeks after another controversy hit the community. Earlier in August, Pine, one of the players who got the World’s First clear of the Vesper’s Host dungeon, revealed that Bungie had banned them with no explanation.
Pine insists they’ve “never cheated” and suspects the ban may have been triggered by clan chat jokes referencing cheat websites. As of now, Bungie has not publicly responded to Pine’s case.
What do you think? Should Bungie be more transparent with these bans? And do you believe there could actually be methods out there that bypass anti-cheat? Let us know your thoughts.
