Bungie is reportedly planning significant layoffs after ending Destiny 2 development, with a new report claiming Destiny 3 is not currently in production.

Earlier today, Bungie officially confirmed a major turning point for Destiny 2. The studio announced that the game’s upcoming June 9 update will be its final content update, bringing an end to active development on the long-running online shooter.

Destiny 2 will remain online, so players will still be able to log in and play, but the regular flow of new content is coming to a close. That is a huge moment for the Destiny community. Destiny 2 launched back in 2017 and has lived for years through expansions, seasons, raids, events, and major story updates.

For many players, this game has been part of their routine for nearly a decade. Bungie is now closing that chapter with a final update that acts as a sendoff. Now, it appears we have some bad news behind the scenes.

Bungie Reportedly Planning Layoffs After Destiny 2 Ends

According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Bungie is planning a significant number of layoffs after ending development on Destiny 2. The report says the studio does not currently have a new project lined up for the Destiny 2 development team once the game’s final update arrives next month.

The report also claims Bungie does not plan to immediately move into production on Destiny 3. That is a major detail, because many fans assumed the end of Destiny 2 could mean Bungie was preparing to move straight into the next main Destiny game. There were even some rumors late last year, suggesting that the next mainline Destiny game is apparently in early development. But, based on this report, that does not seem to be the case right now.

Bloomberg says the number of planned job cuts is not currently known. At the time of writing, Sony and Bungie have not officially announced any layoffs related to the end of Destiny 2 development.

The report adds that Bungie staff are looking to pitch new projects, including possible projects within the Destiny franchise, but none have been greenlit. Bungie is also said to be putting more focus into Marathon, its extraction shooter, which reportedly has not met sales expectations since its March launch. Some Destiny developers have already moved over to Marathon in recent months.

“Bungie’s staff are looking to pitch and begin development of new projects, including in the Destiny franchise, but none have been greenlit and there’s no guarantee that any will move forward in a challenging market that has led companies like Sony to raise prices and cut costs,” the report reads.

Destiny 2’s June 9 update will still bring several additions for Destiny 2, including new rewards, updates to raids and dungeons, Pantheon 2.0, sandbox changes, and the return of Sparrow Racing League as a permanent mode.
