“Who Thought This Was a Good Idea?”: Bungie Under Fire For Time-Gating Destiny 2 Rite of the Nine Dungeons

Bungie is facing backlash over the Destiny 2 Rite of the Nine event, after players found that dungeon rotations are timegated, with unclear communication from the studio.

The new Rite of the Nine event in Destiny 2 launched with a lot of hype. It brought back the Third Spire social space, introduced matchmade dungeons with new difficulty options, and refreshed several dungeon weapons with new perk pools and updated visuals. On paper, it looked like another crowd-pleaser, similar to last year’s “Into the Light” update, which offered reissued weapons and new activities to grind.

But just one week in, that excitement is fading fast. The event kicked off last week on May 6 with Spire of the Watcher as the first featured dungeon. Many players assumed the dungeon would rotate weekly, with Ghosts of the Deep and Prophecy following in the next two resets. Instead, Week 2 brought Spire back again.

Bungie Faces Backlash Over Rite of the Nine Dungeon Rotations

Instead of rotating weekly, Bungie appears to be running each dungeon for three straight weeks, with Spire leading the charge, Ghosts of the Deep coming on May 27, and Prophecy last on June 17. This change wasn’t clearly explained beforehand, leaving many fans confused and frustrated.

To make things worse, Bungie’s original marketing and livestream suggested a weekly rotation, or at least didn’t clarify otherwise. This vague messaging has led to a wave of backlash across Reddit and the official forums.

Right now, the front page of r/DestinyTheGame has several top threads criticizing Bungie’s decision. One top comment said it plainly: “Who is making these dumb decisions? Pick a featured dungeon for each week, the first 3 weeks, then open all of them up for the rest of the event. Nobody wants to run Spire for 3 straight weeks… WTF Bungie.”

Another replied, “My friends and I were really looking forward to doing Ghosts on the hard difficulty tonight. Oh well.” Several others echoed the same confusion: “Wait, it’s not Prophecy or GoTD? That’s insane. Why would they absolutely kill all the momentum this event had?”

Others were more direct, calling it “time-gating bull” and urging Bungie to “just open all three dungeons from now until the event’s conclusion.” Some even referenced past communication issues, pointing out that this isn’t new behavior. “We were told on the Dev live stream that it was a new dungeon each week for Rite,” one post reads.

This isn’t the first time Bungie has received pushback for timegated content. Earlier this year, the limited “Past is Prologue” event timegated the Chatterwhite shader, which wasn’t available until the first week. And with “Into the Light,” half the returning Brave weapons were locked behind a time-gated schedule until community backlash forced Bungie to release them earlier.
