Destiny 2 Game Director Tyson Green has addressed the long-running red subclass rumor, saying it isn’t real, but hints it could still happen in the future.
For years now, Destiny 2 fans have been chasing one of the game’s most persistent rumors: the supposed “red subclass.” This all kicked off in 2023 when a “leaked” clip, supposedly showing a brand-new subclass, made the rounds online. The footage looked convincing enough to get the community talking, and speculation ran wild.
The speculation took off so quickly that even Bungie was asked about it during the Final Shape preview event last year. At the time, the studio was clear: “No red subclass, never was going to be a thing, and it won’t be a thing.”
Earlier this week, the Destiny 2 community got a new wave of information thanks to the hands-on Edge of Fate previews. Content creators and press had the chance to try out the expansion’s first mission, sharing tons of details about upcoming exotics, legendary weapons, and more.
Now, it appears we finally have an official comment from the game director on the long-running “red subclass” theory.
Destiny 2 Game Director Tyson Green Addresses the Red Subclass Rumor
Thanks to a new interview from Destiny 2 creator and streamer Mactics, we finally have an official answer. During his visit to Bungie HQ for the Edge of Fate preview, Mactics sat down with Tyson Green, game director of Destiny 2, to talk about all things subclasses, abilities, and more.
Green was asked directly about the red subclass theory and whether there was any truth to it. He made it clear that the red subclass isn’t happening, but he also didn’t completely rule it out for the future.
“The red subclass isn’t real, it’s not to say that there couldn’t be something like that someday, but that was just a rumor that was spread out,” said Green. “It was kind of fun, but yeah, not a thing right now. Might be a thing someday. Red is definitely a color that we haven’t used yet.”
So while there’s no red subclass coming in the upcoming Edge of Fate expansion, Bungie’s game director made it clear the team isn’t completely against the idea. For now, though, it’s just not on the table.
Green also talked about other subclass ideas that Bungie has tossed around over the years. At one point, the team considered a “Decay” subclass that would focus on poison effects and debuffs. There was even some discussion about a “Kinetic” subclass that would lean into raw physical force.
“There was a time when the fifth subclass was going to be Decay, like sort of poison effects or like dissolution effects or like debuffs and damaging stuff like that. We flirted with the idea of maybe a Kinetic subclass.
“It’s more about raw physical forces and concussions and violence [like] the Titan subclass. But yeah, there are spaces that we haven’t explored yet, and they remain open opportunities for us in the future.”
If you’re looking for what is actually coming next, Edge of Fate will introduce a bunch of new exotic and legendary weapons. You can check out all the details and full lists of these new additions here and here.
