Destiny 2 hits the lowest player count in the franchise’s history on Steam, with an average players of 32,497 players in the last 30 days.

Destiny 2, the looter-shooter MMO from Bungie, has just hit its lowest player count ever on Steam. According to third-party Steam trackers like Steam Charts, the game’s average player count for the last 30 days sits at 32,497 right now.

This marks a steep decline from the high of 123,023 average monthly players in June 2024, when the highly-anticipated The Final Shape expansion launched. Since then, the average player count has plummeted by a staggering ~74%.

According to Charlemagne, a popular third-party bot that tracks player activity using data from the official Bungie API, Destiny 2 currently has an active player base of approximately 469,180 across all platforms. This figure includes players from PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.

Below is a comparison of Steam’s average player counts three months after the launch of a major expansion for the last three years:

  • The Witch Queen (2022): 66,961
  • Lightfall (2023): 62,610
  • The Final Shape (2024): 32,497

Destiny 2 Player Count Falls To A New All-Time Low

The last time Destiny 2 saw player numbers this low on Steam was back in February 2024, when the game averaged 32,567 peak players.

So, what’s driving this decline? Several factors are at play.

First, and probably the biggest, is the conclusion of The Final Shape expansion. This long-awaited expansion wrapped up the game’s decade-long Light and Darkness saga, leaving many players feeling like they’ve reached the end of the road. A portion of the community had stuck around just to see how the story would end, and now that it’s over, they’ve moved on.

Another major factor is that Bungie recently went through a tough period with its second round of layoffs just a month ago, affecting over 200 staff members. Additionally, the future content plans for Destiny 2 seem to be changing significantly, with reports of annual expansions no longer on the table, opting instead for two smaller Content Packs a year.

Bungie’s silence on the long-term future of Destiny 2 is also causing concern. The good news, however, is that just yesterday, Bungie announced it will reveal Destiny 2: Codename Frontiers next week.

And then, there’s Episode Echoes itself, which is nearing its conclusion. With Act 3 already underway and set to end on October 8, 2024, there’s not much going on in the game aside from the weekly story updates.

Destiny 2 has turned seven years old today. While the franchise has weathered many storms, the next few months will be crucial as Bungie navigates dwindling numbers and plans for what’s next.
