Bungie has officially revealed Tomb of Elders, the mysterious Destiny 1-inspired activity during today’s developer livestream for Destiny 2 Episode Revenant Act 2.
In today’s developer livestream for Destiny 2 Episode Revenant Act 2, Bungie finally pulled back the curtain on its latest activity: Tomb of Elders, a clear homage to the beloved Prison of Elders from Destiny 1.
Originally introduced in the House of Wolves expansion in 2015, the Prison of Elders was a wave-based arena mode that pitted players against various enemy factions in a series of escalating challenges. It featured iconic boss encounters like Skolas, Kell of Kells, and Sylok, the Defiled (thirsts for your Light).
Now, Destiny 2 is paying tribute to its roots with the Tomb of Elders, set to launch next week on November 19, 2024, as part of Episode Revenant Act 2.
What To Expect From Tomb Of Elders In Destiny 2
During today’s livestream, Bungie shared several new details about the Tomb of Elders. This “reimagined” activity will feature new and returning bosses, bringing back the survival-style gameplay, while taking inspiration from previous fan-favorite activities in Destiny 2, including Deep Dives, The Coil and Riven’s Lair.
Unlike the original, however, the Tomb of Elders introduces new enemy factions like the Dread, and updated bosses, modifiers, and challenges. Here’s how Bungie described this mode during the livestream.
“It’s very close to Riven’s Lair. For those who remembered, in Riven’s Lair, you had a trap room, then an encounter, then another trap room, then a boss. In this, it’s slightly more action-focused. So we have, that cryopod encounter first, then you’ll have the faction encounter – it’ll take you to a random arena throughout the prison.
“Then you’ll have a short travesal section, and then you’ll have a boss. And after that, you’ll be pulled into the Warden’s office and get your loot and run around the loop again.”
Destiny 2 Tomb of Elders: Warden’s Judgment Explained
The Tomb of Elders features an in-activity reputation system called Warden’s Judgment. When you complete challenges and bonus objectives, it’ll grand you positive stacks, known as Warden’s Favor, which will increase the encounter difficulty while offering improved rewards. Conversely, negative stacks, called Warden’s Punishment, slightly lower the challenge level.
Here’s the official description for Warden’s Judgment reputation system:
- Warden’s Judgment: A dynamic range of values tied to the activity’s difficulty. Stacks of positive Judgment are called Warden’s Favor and increase encounter difficulty. Stacks of negative Judgment are called Warden’s Punishment and slightly decrease difficulty.
- Warden’s Sentencing: Following every reward phase, the Warden will assess the fireteam’s Judgment rating. Warden’s Favor allows the fireteam to skip an encounter, while Warden’s Punishment activates the Punishment Protocol.
- Secondary Objectives: Challenges and critical objectives appear in every encounter. Mastery of these objectives contributes toward Warden’s Judgment.
- Rewards: Granted upon the defeat of a boss. Subsequent laps pay out better rewards. Stacks of Warden’s Favor increase your rewards even further.
