Bungie’s latest announcement confirms a big shift in Destiny 2’s raid and dungeon release cycle. So, what does this mean for Wrath of the Machine reprised raid? Here’s what we know.

Yesterday, Bungie dropped a major update for Destiny 2: Codename Frontiers, announcing that starting in 2025, players will see a shift in the game’s raid and dungeon release schedule.

Instead of the two raids—one of which has been the free reprised raid—and two dungeons players were used to each year, Destiny 2 will only be getting one raid and one dungeon annually. This change has already sparked questions from the community, particularly around Destiny 1’s reprised raids.

Since 2021, Bungie has been bringing back these old favorites for free, starting with Vault of Glass, then King’s Fall, and most recently, Crota’s End. However, one iconic raid has yet to make a return: Wrath of the Machine. Released in 2016 during Destiny 1’s Rise of Iron expansion, Wrath of the Machine is often regarded as one of the best raids in the franchise.

With Bungie reprising three of Destiny 1’s raids already, fans hoped Wrath would be next in line. However, the likelihood of seeing it reprised anytime soon is looking slim.

Why Wrath of the Machine Raid Likely Isn’t Coming to Destiny 2 Anytime Soon

According to multiple sources familiar with Bungie’s development plans, it looks like Wrath of the Machine won’t be making a return to Destiny 2, at least not anytime soon. The reprised raid would need to be rebuilt “from the ground up,” with costs potentially reaching “millions of dollars” due to the complexity of updating it for the current Destiny 2 engine; something Bungie cannot afford right now, sources tell The Game Post.

One source revealed that Bungie did consider the possibility of bringing back Wrath of the Machine at one point. However, after comparing its development costs to King’s Fall raid, which was reprised in 2022, Bungie ultimately decided to shelve the project. The main issue was the raid’s resource-intensive requirements, especially with the unique “Devil Splicer” Fallen combatants and SIVA that are core to the raid’s design.

When asked if there was any reprised raid planned for 2024, the answer was clear: “No, there wasn’t.” The recent layoffs at Bungie, combined with the crunch from developing new content for The Final Shape expansion and the new Salvation’s Edge raid, left the team stretched too thin to focus on additional reprised content, the source revealed.

Bungie’s newly announced schedule also adds another layer of complexity to the reprisal of Wrath of the Machine. With only one raid coming per year moving forward, Bungie seems focused on prioritizing fresh experiences over revisiting older content.

That said, there is still some hope for legacy content. The fourth “Major Update” of each year will feature an activity similar to The Pantheon, where players can revisit older raids and dungeons. However, whether Wrath of the Machine will be included in this event remains to be seen.

So, is Destiny 2 getting Wrath of the Machine in 2024? The short answer is probably not. Bungie’s current roadmap, two rounds of layoffs, combined with lower number of resources overall compared to last year, makes it unlikely that we’ll see the return of this beloved raid anytime soon.
