One of the standout new Exotics is a hand cannon called Graviton Spike. Before we walk through the steps, let’s talk a little bit about what makes Graviton Spike so special.

Destiny 2 Graviton Spike Exotic Perks

Graviton Spike is a 150 RPM Exotic hand cannon introduced in the Edge of Fate expansion. What makes it stand out is that it features two firing modes:

  • Arc Mode: Fast-firing, great for close to mid-range
  • Stasis Mode: Slower, more controlled shots

You can check out the exotic perks on this weapon below.

  • Temporal Manipulation IV (Intrinsic Perk): Press [R] to swap between fast-firing Arc mode or slow-firing Stasis mode. Final blows and precision hits overcharge the opposing mode to enable additional effects.
  • Temporal Anomaly (Trait): While overcharged, each mode expends a portion of overcharge for additional effects on final blows or precision hits:
    • Arc mode calls down lightning strikes.
    • Stasis mode creates an explosion and a formation of Stasis crystals.

In this guide, we’ll go through exactly how to unlock Graviton Spike, step by step.

To unlock Graviton Spike, you need to complete a post-campaign Exotic quest called “Graviton Through the Ages.” This quest only becomes available after you’ve fully completed the Edge of Fate campaign.

It doesn’t matter whether you finish the story on Normal or Legendary difficulty; either version works. But you do need to finish the whole thing before this quest will appear.

Once that’s done, head over to the Altar of Relativity vendor on Kepler. That’s where the quest begins.

Now, let’s go through every step of this Exotic quest in the order in which they appear.

Step 1: Speak to Lodi

The first step requires you to speak with Lodi, an NPC you’ll find in the Caldera social space on Kepler. He’ll give you the next steps and get you started.

Step 2: Talk to the Emeritus

Once Lodi sends you on your way, go talk to The Emeritus, another character located in the same hub. This sets up the first search objective.

Step 3: Triangulate Location in the Outer Steppes

You’ll now need to use the Rosetta Device in the Outer Steppes zone. Make sure to track the questline, it will show you the waypoints for where you need to go for each step.

Simply follow the path until you reach the area. Once in the zone, look for an Aionian Command Module on the left-hand side near the rock formations behind a small room. It will say, “Input fluent Aionian Command.”

However, the module is locked at first. To open it, you’ll need to defeat a yellow-bar Rosetta Vex Sentry Minotaur patrolling nearby. These enemies are always guarding these terminals during the quest, so clear them out before trying to interact with anything.

Once the Minotaur is down, walk up to the Command Module and activate it. This will trigger the next step.

Step 4: Find the First Weapon Piece

After activating the Command Module, your objective will update, and a new search area will appear on your map. Head toward the marked zone, and make sure the quest is still tracked so you can follow the on-screen guidance.

In this area, you’ll need to use your Matterspark. Equip it. You’ll be looking for three charging nodes scattered nearby.

Tip

You can summon Matterspark anywhere after completing the main story campaign, just like your Sparrow. Simply press the same button you normally use to call your Sparrow and the it will appear instantly.

Here’s how it works:

  • The first node is located just off a small cliff near where you start. Drop down and charge it.
  • Charging the first node activates a launch portal right next to it that flings you to the second node.
  • Continue following the route using the Matterspark and charging each node as you go.

After you’ve activated all three nodes and completed the short traversal segment, you’ll arrive at a small room. Inside, look for a pile of debris. Interact with it to retrieve the first piece of the Graviton Spike weapon.

Step 5: Return to the Emeritus

Go back to The Emeritus in Caldera. They’ll direct you to a new zone.

Step 6: Triangulate the Location in the Gorge

Once you’ve returned to the Emeritus and progressed the quest, your next destination is the Gorge area on Kepler. Just like with the previous location, open your map and make sure the quest is tracked; this will highlight the waypoint for the next Aionian Command Module interaction.

To get there quickly, fast travel to the Assimilated Easement. From there, follow the waypoint marker into the Gorge. You’ll be heading toward another Rosetta triangulation site.

Once there, take down the Rosetta Vex Sentry Minotaur, just like in the Outer Steppes. You’ll need to defeat it before you can access the Command Module. Once the area is clear, interact with the terminal, which is located behind the small Vex structure to the far left of the room, to activate the next step of the quest.

Step 7: Find the Second Weapon Piece

Once you’ve activated the Rosetta Device in the Gorge, your objective will update again, sending you out to recover the second piece of Graviton Spike. This step includes some light traversal and puzzle-solving using both Matamorph and Matterspark abilities.

Start by following the waypoint deeper into the Stellar Sink. Eventually, you’ll come across a Matamorph node right before entering a large open area. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you spot a gunk-covered tree sitting in the middle of the area.

Here’s what to do:

  • Pick up the Matamorph at the node.
  • Then, look to the far left side of the open area; there’s a small portal there.
  • Use Matterspark to reach and enter the portal. (These portals only work while you’re on your Matterspark)
  • Once you come out the other side, turn sharply left and head into a small cave. A waypoint should pop up on your HUD once you’re close.
  • Inside the cave, you’ll see a narrow crawlspace. Go partway in, then look for a left-hand turn; there will be a hidden side opening.
  • Turn left and use Matamorph to unlock the sealed passage behind that opening.

Once the barrier is gone, go inside and you’ll find the second searchable pile. Interact with it to collect the second fragment of the Graviton Spike Exotic hand cannon. It will progress the quest.

Step 8: Speak to Lodi Again

Head back to Lodi in Caldera for the next assignment.

Step 9: Triangulate Location in Exile’s Accord

After speaking with Lodi again, your quest will update and send you to Exile’s Accord, located on the far right side of the Kepler map. Fast travel to the Curtilage Divide area to get close.

This step can be a bit tricky to navigate. The search area appears near a train, and it might seem like you’re supposed to go through it, but don’t. Instead, look to the right of the train, where there’s a Matterspark portal.

Use your Matterspark ability to enter the portal on the right side. Follow the route carefully until you reach an open zone with a group of enemies. Here, there’s a small room on the left side that will have another Rosetta Vex Sentry Minotaur (and maybe a Fallen Brig too). Enter the room, and defeat the Vex Minotaur.

After that, activate the Aionian Command Module located on the left side of the room to complete this triangulation step.

Step 10: Find the Third Weapon Piece

After activating the terminal, you’ll now need to track down the next weapon fragment. From the area you’re currently in, backtrack to the earlier train location. This time, go through the train tunnel itself, the one you avoided earlier.

Once you pass through the tunnel, you’ll enter a hallway-style area. At the end of this section, there’s another debris pile waiting for you. Interact with it to grab the third weapon piece.

Step 11: Speak with the Emeritus

Go back to Caldera again and visit The Emeritus for the next step.

Step 12: Collect Data Fragments from Vex

Now it’s time to collect Vex Data Fragments, and the good news is this step is fairly straightforward.

Stay near the Caldera area, there are plenty of Vex enemies spawning nearby. Defeating regular Vex will give you small amounts of data, but yellow-bar (elite) enemies give more, so focus on those when possible.

Here’s a tip: look around for an object that can be activated to trigger a sort of mini public event in the area. It starts spawning waves of Vex, including a boss at the end. If it’s available for you, absolutely activate it; it will speed up this step significantly.

If not, just rotate through the area, take out Vex as they spawn, and make your way toward the required total. You need 100 Data Fragments in total, and this step doesn’t take long if you stay active.

Step 13: Find the Final Weapon Piece

Once you’ve collected enough fragments, the quest updates again and points you to a new area, just north of your current location. Fast travel to the Aionian Campus to begin.

When you arrive, you’ll be met with more Vex. Clear them out, then look for another Aionian Command Module and activate it to move the quest forward.

Next, you’ll head into a zone with a bit of light puzzle-solving. This area has faded red walls. In the far left corner of the area, there’s a Mattermorph node hidden inside a large tube-like structure. Interact with it to activate the ability.

Now, make your way toward the center of the zone, where you’ll see a giant crane holding a suspended container. Use your Mattermorph ability on the container; this will cause it to open. Jump inside the container and pick up the Relocator Cannon.

Then head back where you came from. You’ll notice a door that’s slightly open, just enough to see through it. Aim your Relocator Cannon through that gap and shoot the node on the other side.

This will activate a teleporter on the right-hand side of the room. Step into it, and you’ll be teleported into the room. Right in front of you is the final pile. Interact with it to collect the last weapon piece for the Graviton Spike.

Step 13: Speak to Lodi

Return to Lodi in Caldera one last time. He’ll send you off to complete the final part of the quest, assembling the weapon.

Step 14: Complete the Sieve Activity

This is the last and only time-gated step of the quest. You’ll need to complete a matchmade activity called The Sieve.

The Sieve only appears periodically on the Kepler map. If it’s not showing up yet, don’t worry, it cycles in and out. Just keep checking back. When it does show up, it’ll be marked clearly on the map and can be launched from a flag in the Caldera hub.

Complete the activity, and you’ll unlock the Graviton Spike Exotic hand cannon.

Is Graviton Spike Craftable in Destiny 2?

Yes, it is! Once you unlock Graviton Spike for the first time by completing the Exotic quest, you’ll also receive a Deepsight version of the weapon. This allows you to extract the pattern and fully unlock it for crafting at The Enclave.

That’s it for this guide. While you’re here, make sure to check out our loot table hub for all raid and dungeon loot tables.
