Kojima Productions has announced Death Stranding Isolations, a brand-new animated series coming to Disney+ in 2027.

Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions are expanding the world of Death Stranding once again, this time through a full animated series titled Death Stranding Isolations (working title). The project was officially announced during Disney+’s Originals Preview event at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort earlier today, with Kojima himself and director Takayuki Sano taking the stage to introduce it.

The series is set to launch exclusively on Disney+ in 2027, marking Kojima Productions’ first-ever partnership with a global streaming platform. The studio shared a detailed press release outlining exactly what fans can expect, and there’s a lot to break down.

Death Stranding Isolations is being created as a hand-drawn 2D animated series, handled by Japanese studio E&H production. Kojima Productions says the team is aiming for a bold but grounded style that carries the same emotional weight people associate with the games.

The series is directed by Takayuki Sano, with character designs by Ilya Kuvshinov, known for their work on Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. Kojima serves as the executive producer.

Concept art released today shows two characters suited up in familiar Death Stranding gear, setting the tone for the series’ focus on people trying to keep going in a place where staying connected isn’t easy.

A New Story Running Parallel to Sam’s Journey

One thing Kojima Productions makes very clear in the press release: Death Stranding Isolation is not a retelling of the first game or Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Instead, it’s an original story set somewhere in North America, happening at the same time Sam Bridges is traveling across the continent.

While Sam is working to reconnect a broken America, this series turns the camera toward a different group of people dealing with their own struggles. The show follows a young man and young woman who set out on their own path in a world where the dead can reach out into the living world and trigger massive destruction. Their journey is shaped by the same loneliness and fear seen in the games, but the focus here is on how ordinary people respond to a collapsing society.

Here’s the full story synopsis for Death Stranding Isolations:

Once, there was an explosion…

Lonesome souls of the dead manifest in the physical world, reaching in search of the living. However, the connection they create triggers a massive explosion that eradicates anything of this world—a phenomenon referred to as the Death Stranding. These events wipe out nations as well as civilization itself. People who remain are now isolated, withdrawn, and without connections. As humanity stands at the brink a legendary porter set out to transport both cargo and wishes of its senders, reconnecting people in the hope that they might still be saved.

Based on the video game born out of the mind of legendary game creator, Hideo Kojima, comes a new animation series headed by Japan’s up-and-coming animation studio E&H production. Helmed by E&H’s Takayuki Sano, it follows in the footsteps of the original in spirit and ideas and depict the world of Death Stranding through a bold and yet subtle touch and top-class hand-drawn animation.

“Somewhere in North America, just as Sam Bridges walks through the continent in order to save America, the someones are also trying to deal with their isolation in their own way. An old man trying to realize salvation through ways outside of the connection advocated by Bridges. A female warrior who tries to kickstart a world of constant fighting. A boy with a grudge against Bridges. A girl who embraces loneliness.

On the precipice of the end of humanity and the world, their fates and hopes converge, as another story of Death Stranding begins.

And now, comes another explosion…
