A new God of War game featuring Kratos is reportedly on the way, and it’s set in Greece, but it’s not the next big title from Santa Monica Studio.
For a while now, there’s been talk about PlayStation going back to Kratos’ roots. Rumors earlier this year suggested Sony was working on a remastered collection of the original Greek-era God of War games. Those rumors turned out to be false.
More recently, a new report suggested that a brand-new God of War title is in development, one that takes place in Greece. It’s said to be a smaller-scale side project, separate from the next big game by Santa Monica Studio. At the time, it wasn’t clear if Kratos would actually return as the main character—but now, we finally have some answers.
New Details on Greek God of War Side Project
We’re now hearing a bit more about this upcoming rumored Greek God of War title, and it sounds like Kratos fans have something to look forward to this year. According to a new rumor shared during a livestream, this game will star Kratos, will be set in Greek mythology, and will not be the next major game from Sony Santa Monica.
The info comes from Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb, who revealed the new details during the Game Breaking News segment earlier today. While he didn’t share much about the gameplay or story, he made it very clear what players can expect when it comes to the scale and focus of the game.
“I was explicitly told, there would be a God of War side-story this year, starring Kratos, and very likely having to do with the Greek setting,” Grubb said. “So, Greek setting Kratos, and you know, I was told side-project. Something that is not the next big Sony Santa Monica game.”
Even though he called it a side-project, it’s still exciting news, especially for longtime fans who’ve missed the original mythology Kratos came from. It’s also worth noting that Santa Monica Studio recently posted job listings hinting at a new God of War project, so there’s clearly a lot happening behind the scenes.
As of now, there’s no word on when or where this game will be revealed, but if Grubb’s sources are right, we’ll likely hear more at the PlayStation State of Play or a separate Showcase event.
