A new God of War game set in Greek mythology is reportedly on the way, but it’s not the remaster fans were expecting.
It’s been 20 years since Kratos first made his brutal debut, and God of War has grown into one of PlayStation’s most iconic franchises. From its roots in Greek mythology to its recent Norse saga, the series has continued to evolve while keeping that same powerful storytelling and brutal combat fans fell in love with.
Leading up to the 20th-anniversary celebration, the internet was full of rumors about a possible remaster collection of the original Greek-era God of War games. Many fans were expecting an announcement during the anniversary event itself, but that didn’t happen.
In fact, Sony Santa Monica officially came out and said there were “no planned announcements” for this event, putting those remaster hopes to rest. But that doesn’t mean nothing is coming.
A New Greek God of War Game Is Coming, It’s Claimed
According to new information shared by a well-known industry insider, Jeff Grubb, there is a new God of War project in development—and yes, it’s set in the Greek mythology era. But it’s not a remaster collection of the old games like many expected. Instead, it’s reportedly a completely new side-story game.
The info comes from a post on Bluesky, where the insider shared what they’ve heard from sources familiar with Sony’s plans. While they never heard anything about a remaster collection, they did ask around after seeing all the speculation online
“There’s still a Greek God of War thing coming out this year, but it’s not a remaster collection,” the post reads. “It’s a new side-story project. I was never told about a Remaster collection, but I asked a source about the rumors (that I saw were focused on a collection) and they told me that nothing God of War would happen at the State of Play but something could show up at the anniversary.”
So, while the remaster rumors were off the mark, something is definitely in the works. It sounds like fans can expect a new story set during Kratos’ original Greek era, though it’s not clear yet when in the timeline this new project would take place or what kind of game it will be.
Before this update, there were also reports of Sony Santa Monica posting job listings that hinted at new God of War development. Other rumors have floated around about the franchise possibly shifting to Egyptian mythology next, though nothing has been confirmed on that front yet.
Outside of games, the world of God of War is expanding even more. Amazon’s live-action TV series has already been greenlit for two seasons, as confirmed by the new showrunner.
