A new report claims Microsoft has “fully greenlit” its next-gen Xbox console, targeting a 2027 release with full backward compatibility.

It’s been an interesting time for Xbox. Over the past few months, Microsoft has made some bold moves, such as putting former exclusives like Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves on PlayStation, with more on the way. It’s clear the company is shifting its strategy, focusing on reaching more players wherever they are rather than relying on console sales alone.

But even with all these changes, Xbox hasn’t forgotten about the people who still love dedicated hardware. And if a new report is to be believed, the next-generation Xbox is already in the works.

Leaked Details on the Next-Gen Xbox Console

This new information comes from a report by Jez Corden at Windows Central, who claims Microsoft’s successor to the Xbox Series X is now fully in production. According to the report, the next-gen Xbox console is targeting a 2027 release and will focus on seamless integration with Windows, making it easier for developers to bring PC games to the platform.

The leak also states that the new Xbox will support full backward compatibility, meaning players won’t lose access to their digital libraries from previous generations. On top of that, Microsoft is reportedly working on a new first-party gaming handheld, a separate project from the previously rumored handheld launching in 2025 with a third-party partner.

“Because indeed, our sources also indicate that Microsoft’s internal successor to the Xbox Series X|S platform has been fully greenlit all the way up to CEO Satya Nadella. For now, I understand that Microsoft’s next-gen hardware plans include a premium successor to the powerful Xbox Series X, alongside its own Xbox gaming handheld, and several new controller options,” Corden wrote in the report.

Additionally, Microsoft is exploring AI-driven features and direct-to-cloud controller connectivity, potentially making it easier to switch between devices.

Of course, as with any leak, it’s important to take this with a grain of salt. Plans can change, and Microsoft hasn’t officially confirmed anything yet. But if this is what’s coming, Xbox fans could have a lot to look forward to in the next few years.
