A new leak has revealed some early specs for Sony’s next PlayStation handheld, hinting at AI upscaling, 16GB RAM, and other next-gen features.
Sony’s next generation of gaming hardware has been the subject of nonstop rumors lately, with talk of a PlayStation 6 in the works and plenty of speculation about what kind of console it will be. On top of that, there have been several reports that Sony is bringing back its portable console lineup, possibly launching a brand-new handheld alongside the PS6.
Now, it seems like we finally have a glimpse at what’s coming. Thanks to a new leak making the rounds, some early details about Sony’s next handheld PlayStation have surfaced online. While nothing is official yet, the information is painting a picture of a device that could be a real step up from what we’ve seen before, not just a streaming device, but a true portable PlayStation console with some interesting features.
Early PlayStation 6 Portable Specs Leak Online
The latest details come from the NeoGAF forums, where well-known hardware leaker Kepler_L2 has been discussing what Sony is planning for its next-gen portable. This user has a history of sharing accurate details on hardware, and their new comments have caught the attention of a lot of PlayStation fans.
According to Kepler_L2, the PlayStation 6 portable is set to include support for AI upscaling, which could make games look even better on the smaller screen. They also imply the handheld will feature 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM. “16 GB of LPDDR5X is dirt cheap,” they said, suggesting there’s little reason for Sony to hold back on memory.
The leak also says the handheld will only have about a third of the memory bandwidth compared to the PS5, but it’s getting extra cache (4MB L2 plus 16MB MALL cache) and improved memory compression, which should help offset that limitation.
As for the graphics chip, while it’s not expected to match the PS5 in raw power, it will use a new RDNA5-based design that makes every compute unit much more efficient than before.
Here’s a quick rundown of reported PS6 portable specs so far:
- AI upscaling support
- 16GB LPDDR5X RAM
- 4MB L2 cache + 16MB MALL cache (Infinity Cache)
- Around one-third the memory bandwidth of a PS5
- New AMD RDNA5-based architecture
Of course, none of this is confirmed yet, so it’s best to take it all with a grain of salt. Sony hasn’t made any announcements about a PS6 handheld, and details could change as development continues.
As for the timing, reports suggest that the PlayStation 6 and its handheld might launch together, possibly around 2027 or 2028. There are also rumors that Sony is testing a “low power mode” on PS5 dev kits, which some think is being used to simulate how games will run on this future portable.
