Sony confirms its live-action Horizon Zero Dawn movie has a finished script and plans to start filming in 2026, aiming for a 2027 release, according to a new court filing.

Back in 2022, Sony revealed plans for a Horizon live-action TV show at Netflix, with The Umbrella Academy’s Steve Blackman attached to lead it. That series quietly fell apart in 2024 after misconduct allegations surfaced against its showrunner.

Early this year, in January, during Sony’s CES presentation, the company announced that a Horizon Zero Dawn feature film was in the works with Columbia Pictures, the same studio behind Sony’s Uncharted (2022) and Gran Turismo (2023) adaptations.

Now, there’s a new update: we finally have new info on when the Horizon Zero Dawn movie is expected to shoot and release.

Horizon Zero Dawn Movie has a Script, Shooting Planned for 2026

In Sony’s ongoing lawsuit against Tencent over Light of Motiram, which the company describes as a “slavish clone” of its Horizon franchise, new details have surfaced about the long-awaited Horizon Zero Dawn movie.

According to a legal document obtained by The Game Post, head of PlayStation Productions, Asad Qizilbash, revealed that the Horizon Zero Dawn movie already has a working script, and Sony is actively looking for a director. The company is aiming to start filming in 2026, with a planned release in 2027.

This info comes from Qizilbash’s sworn declaration filed yesterday. (October 16)

“We are in development for a film based on Horizon in partnership with Columbia Pictures,” Qizilbash said in his declaration. “We already have a working script and are actively searching for a director, with the goal of shooting the picture in 2026 and releasing it in 2027. The live-action film follows the recent collaborations between Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions on the 2022 film Uncharted and the 2023 film Gran Turismo.”

The declaration also highlights how central Aloy, the main character from Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, is to PlayStation’s brand. Qizilbash describes her as a “key icon in the anticipated film” and emphasizes her importance “to the flywheel of franchise building.”

No actors or showrunners have been announced publicly yet, and casting is likely still underway.

The Horizon Zero Dawn film joins a growing slate at PlayStation Productions. Upcoming projects confirmed through official announcements and reports include Chad Stahelski’s Ghost of Tsushima feature, a Days Gone movie written by Oscar-nominated Sheldon Turner, Amazon’s God of War series, The Last of Us season three at HBO/Max, a Gravity Rush feature, a Helldivers 2 feature, and the Ghost of Tsushima: Legends anime headed to Crunchyroll.
