The Final Shape launched on June 4, 2024, and immediately captivated the Destiny 2 community, leading to an influx of new and returning players. Notably, the expansion’s success isn’t solely defined by this initial spike.

The report states that Destiny 2 has maintained this increased player count with minimal drop-off, following the release of The Final Shape. Data from the week ending June 16, 2024, shows that the game only experienced a 0.45% decrease in players.

Comparatively, Destiny 2’s previous expansion, Lightfall, launched in 2023, did not fare as well. Although it attracted a 26.04% increase in players, it saw a 4.76% drop-off in the second week, leading to a 7.02% decrease in player count in April 2023 – five weeks after launch. This contrast highlights the exceptional performance of The Final Shape.

The ability of The Final Shape to retain its player base can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, the expansion introduces an engaging story campaign that has resonated with the community. Additionally, the release of Echoes, the first episode of the year, on June 11, 2024, provided fresh seasonal content and rewards for players to unlock.

It’s important to note that this is not official data from Bungie or Sony. As such, these findings should be taken with a grain of salt, keeping in mind the potential for discrepancies and the inherent limitations of third-party data collection.

The Final Shape has garnered widespread acclaim from both fans and critics, earning the distinction of being the highest-rated Destiny expansion in franchise history on both OpenCritic and Metacritic.

Despite experiencing day-one server issues, which hindered its potential, The Final Shape came close to setting a new all-time high for concurrent players on Steam. These initial technical challenges also impacted user reviews, which, without the setbacks, likely would have elevated from an 80% positive rating to an impressive 90%.

The success of The Final Shape is a significant win for Bungie, especially considering the studio’s recent challenges, including job cuts and the delay of its other project, Marathon. Are you enjoying Destiny 2: The Final Shape expansion? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
