Nintendo Switch 2 brings a new Quick Access feature that lets players remap the Pro Controller’s back buttons mid-game.

With less than a month to go until the Nintendo Switch 2 officially launches on June 5, excitement around the next-gen console is hitting a new high. From improved hardware to new features, there’s a lot to look forward to, and now, Nintendo has revealed another neat upgrade: players will be able to customize their controller buttons mid-game using a brand-new shortcut menu.

This includes support for the GL and GR buttons, which are located on the back of the new Pro Controller and the Joy-Con 2 charging case.

Mid-Game Button Remapping Is Now a Thing

This new feature was revealed in a short video posted to the Nintendo Today app, showing off the system’s redesigned Quick Access Settings. During the clip, we see the Mario Kart World home screen as the player holds the HOME button to pull up a new menu, and from there, you can assign custom functions to the GL and GR back buttons.

According to information that accompanied the video, the console will remember each user’s button assignments on a per-game basis. That means if you remap buttons for one title, it won’t affect your controls in another. It’s a small but welcome change that makes switching between games a smoother experience.

How to Remap Buttons on the Switch 2 Pro Controller

Here’s how the new button remapping feature works:

  • While in a game, press and hold the HOME button to bring up the Quick Access Settings.
  • Go to the GL/GR Button Configuration section.
  • Click on the GL option to remap it. Same for the GR button.
  • The console will automatically store it for the game you’re playing.
  • Repeat the process for other games as needed. Each title will remember your setup.

The feature works with both the Switch 2 Pro Controller and the Joy-Con 2 charging case, both of which have GL and GR buttons built into the back for easy access.

This is just one of many features Nintendo is packing into the Switch 2. Rumors suggest the console may also include paid and free theme support in future updates, with unlockable designs available through Platinum Points or the eShop.

In other news, Nintendo has filed a lawsuit against the accessory makers Genki, accusing the company of trademark infringement and false advertising at CES 2025. On top of that, demand for the Switch 2 in Japan is already sky-high.

Retailers like Bic Camera and Joshin are using lotteries and spending requirements to manage pre-orders due to expected shortages. Estimates suggest launch day demand could exceed five times the available stock.
