A new leak claims to reveal early specs, features, release window, and potential price for Sony’s PlayStation 6 handheld console, codenamed “Canis.”
Handheld gaming has seen a major boost in the last few years. The Steam Deck proved that PC gaming on the go could be more than just a gimmick. ASUS jumped in with the ROG Ally, and Nintendo launched the long-awaited Switch 2 earlier this year, breaking records. Portable hardware is no longer just for casual play; people expect full console-level experiences they can take anywhere.
Sony, of course, has been down this road before with the PSP and PS Vita. But for a while now, the company’s focus has stayed on traditional home consoles. That might be changing soon. For months, there have been rumors about the PlayStation 6, its performance targets, and a possible new handheld system to go with it.
Now, a fresh leak claims to reveal new details about that portable, including its codename, early specs, and even when it might launch.
PlayStation 6 Handheld Specs Leak: Everything We Know
This new information comes from YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead, who says he’s seen internal AMD and Sony documents tied to the PlayStation 6 project. According to him, the PlayStation 6 handheld is codenamed “Canis” and is planned as a native gaming device rather than a cloud-streaming add-on.
While the specs aren’t final, the leak outlines the kind of hardware Sony was targeting when talks with AMD first began, and some of it has been backed up by newer sources.
The leaked specs for the PlayStation 6 handheld suggest Sony is building a compact but capable portable system that could serve as both a dedicated handheld and a dockable mini-console. Powered by AMD’s Zen 6c CPU cores and RDNA 5 graphics, it’s designed to be efficient enough for a smaller form factor while still packing enough performance to run modern games at a solid level, with ray tracing potentially outpacing even the PS5.
It’s expected to support PS4 and PS5 titles through backward compatibility, use LPDDR5X memory, and offer multiple storage options, including both MicroSD and M.2 SSD expansion.
Here are the full leaked specs for the PlayStation 6 handheld:
- CPU: 4 × Zen 6c cores (3nm process)
- GPU: 12–20 RDNA 5 compute units @ 1.6–2.0 GHz
- RAM: 16 GB LPDDR5X-7500+ on a 128-bit bus
- Estimated Power Draw: 15 W thermal board power
- Performance Target: About half the PS5’s rasterization performance, but potentially stronger in ray tracing due to RDNA 5 improvements
- Backward Compatibility: PS5 and PS4 support, with PS5 “Low Power Mode” for better performance matching
- Storage Options: MicroSD slot and M.2 SSD slot
- Display: Touchscreen
- Other Hardware: Dual microphones, haptic vibration, USB-C with fast charging and video output (speculated to allow docked play on TVs)
The documents and diagrams Moore’s Law is Dead described include a USB-C port capable of video output, suggesting the handheld could be connected to a TV much like the Nintendo Switch. While this feature is not confirmed, the leak claims Sony intends for the device to work both as a portable and as a mini home console when docked.
The handheld is also said to include haptic feedback similar to the DualSense controller, as well as multiple storage options so users aren’t locked into one format. All of this is built with a form factor that aims to be more compact than many current “PC handhelds,” while still offering higher efficiency and better ray tracing than the ROG Ally X.
PlayStation 6 Handheld Release Date
According to the leak, both the PS6 and the PS6 handheld are planned for manufacturing in mid-2027, with a release window of late 2027 or early 2028. This would follow Sony’s usual seven-year console cycle, lining up neatly after the PS5’s 2020 launch. While the handheld could release alongside the home console, the source notes it might also arrive just a month later
PlayStation 6 Handheld Price
The handheld’s targeted design is meant to keep production costs down. With a smaller, more efficient chip than the PS5, the leak suggests Sony could aim for a price somewhere in the $400–$500 range, putting it directly against the Switch 2.
There’s also speculation that a “console-only” variant of the same APU could be sold for even less, potentially acting as a budget PS6 model in the $299–$350 range.
If these leaks are accurate, “Canis” could be Sony’s biggest handheld push in over a decade. That said, nothing here is confirmed, and plans can change before launch, so it’s best to take everything with a grain of salt.
