A new report claims Microsoft is working on an Xbox handheld console set for 2025, featuring Windows, Steam, and Game Pass support.
For years, rumors have swirled about Microsoft working on a handheld Xbox device, but nothing concrete ever came out—until now. A new report suggests that an Xbox-branded handheld console is in development and could launch as soon as 2025.
If true, this would be Microsoft’s first real step into the portable gaming market, bringing Windows, Steam, and Xbox Game Pass functionality to a handheld device. While this report gives us a better look at Microsoft’s next move, it’s not the only thing cooking behind the scenes. There are also whispers about next-gen Xbox consoles.
What’s New About the Xbox Handheld? Details Leaked
This latest report comes from Windows Central’s Jez Corden, who claims Microsoft is working with a well-known PC gaming OEM (like ASUS, Lenovo, or Razer) to launch an Xbox-branded handheld in 2025. The project, codenamed “Keenan,” is said to run full Windows, allowing users to access the Microsoft Store, Xbox Game Pass, and even Steam.
Since this is a partner device, it won’t be entirely built in-house like traditional Xbox consoles. Instead, it will be similar to Lenovo’s Legion Go or ASUS’s ROG Ally, but with a more streamlined experience and official Xbox branding.
“Microsoft is working with a PC gaming OEM on an Xbox-branded gaming handheld, surprisingly slated for later in 2025 if plans are met,” the report reads. “Codename ‘Keenan,’ this gaming handheld will look unmistakably ‘Xbox’ we’re told, complete with an official Xbox guide button, and Xbox design sensibilities.”
The report states that this device will likely test “new Windows 11 ‘device aware’ capabilities while reducing third-party OEM bloatware that are typical of devices like the Lenovo Legion Go and ASUS ROG Ally.”
Of course, as with any leak, plans can change. Microsoft has not officially confirmed the existence of this handheld, so it’s best to keep expectations in check until we hear something concrete.
