Bungie has accidentally released Destiny 2’s Rite of the Nine content early with today’s Heresy Act 2 update.

If you logged into Destiny 2 today expecting just another routine update, you might have noticed something a little… off. Bungie rolled out the planned Heresy Act 2 update, but players quickly realized that something extra had slipped through the cracks. The upcoming Rite of the Nine event, originally set to launch with Heresy Act 3 on April 1, has gone live—three weeks early.

The Rite of the Nine event was supposed to be a new dungeon-focused experience bringing back Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep with new modes, loot, and difficulties. Instead, thanks to what appears to be a slip-up in today’s patch, players can already access some of its content.

The catch? It’s not fully baked yet.

What’s Going on With Rite of the Nine in Destiny 2?

Right now, players can enter the new dungeon activity tied to Rite of the Nine, but there are some obvious issues. Weapons, like the returning Prosecutor auto rifle, are dropping without their actual in-game models—meaning you’re essentially holding a placeholder.

Despite this, players are already jumping in to test the content. The three difficulty modes—Explorer, Eternity, and Contest (Ultimatum)—appear to be working as intended, including the Contest modifiers that make Ultimatum the toughest challenge.

The Third Spire social space, which is returning from Trials of the Nine, is also live. However, it appears players are unable to actually launch into this activity. Now, Bungie has officially addressed the situation, confirming that this was a mistake and that access to the content will be removed as soon as possible.

In a statement shared via the Destiny 2 Team account, the developer said:

“We are aware of an issue where early, incomplete versions of Rite of the Nine Dungeons are accessible. Access to Rite of the Nine activities will be disabled as soon as possible, and all related rewards will be disabled from use until further notice.

“This content is still in the oven and are looking forward to the completed versions being released at a later date. We apologize for the hiccup!”

Update, March 11, 1:35p PT: Bungie has taken the Destiny 2 servers offline to investigate the issue.

“Destiny 2 is being brought offline for emergency maintenance as we investigate Rite of the Nine activities going live early,” the developer said in a post on X.

Update 2, March 11, 1:59p PT: Bungie has provided another update stating that the game will remain online but it has disabled the activity nodes for the Rite of the Nine activities.

“Destiny 2 will remain online. Instead, we have disabled access to all Rite of the Nine activities.”
