The Bungie Borderlands remake rumor has been dismissed, undercutting claims of a Destiny-style live-service reboot of Borderlands 1.
A rumor claiming Bungie could remake the original Borderlands as a Destiny-style live-service shooter spread this week after Destiny creator Trance shared alleged details involving Sony, 2K, and Gearbox. The pitch supposedly included an open world, paid seasonal content, and customizable protagonists replacing the four original Vault Hunters.
The claim already had a sourcing problem. The story was later traced back to an anonymous 4chan post, with no named insider, supporting document, or independent report behind it. None of the companies involved has announced the project, and no established reporter had supported the rumor before today.

Now, one reporter with a long record of covering Bungie has pushed back directly.
Bungie Borderlands Remake Rumor Dismissed
Earlier today, Forbes’ Paul Tassi posted on X that he had checked the claim with a source. Their response was blunt: “On no planet is this real.” According to Tassi’s source, the rumored Bungie Borderlands remake is not in development.
Tassi followed the quote with “Shocking,” a sarcastic jab at a rumor that had already asked readers to accept several unlikely steps at once. Bungie would need to take over another studio’s series, rebuild a 2009 game around a service model, and coordinate the deal across Sony, 2K, and Gearbox. That’s a lot of corporate machinery resting on one anonymous post.
This isn’t an official denial from Bungie or the Borderlands rights holders. Still, it carries more weight than the original claim because Tassi regularly reports on Bungie and has cited studio sources in previous coverage.
The rumor also alleged that Gearbox could later remake Borderlands 2 as a timed PlayStation 6 exclusive. That part remains unsupported and came from the same anonymous source.
Bungie’s public slate still centers on Marathon, now that Destiny 2 has entered maintenance mode, following a massive round of layoffs last month.

For now, there’s no credible evidence that Bungie is making a Borderlands remake, live-service or otherwise. Would you have wanted Bungie’s take on Pandora, or does this denial come as a relief? Let us know in the comments.
