Destiny 2‘s new Edge of Fate expansion just launched, and fans are already calling it one of the best stories in the franchise.
Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate launched earlier this week on July 15, and now that players have had time to play through the full campaign, reactions are starting to pour in. The expansion kicks off the beginning of The Fate Saga, the next multi-year story following The Final Shape, and it brings with it a brand-new narrative revolving around the Nine, new gear, and the introduction of the Matterspark and Mattermorph abilities.
With all of the story missions now available and completed by many players, the community is getting a clearer picture of what this new era of Destiny has to offer, and the early verdict? The story’s getting some serious love.
From casual players to top streamers and lore creators, a lot of folks are saying this might be one of the best narrative experiences Bungie has ever delivered.
Fans Say Edge of Fate’s Story Is One of Destiny 2’s Best, But Not Everyone Loves How It Plays
The general vibe so far is that Edge of Fate absolutely nails the story. Multiple players have called it top-tier, with some saying it’s even better than The Witch Queen. The emotional depth, character moments, and final mission reveal all seem to be hitting the right notes.
On the other hand, the campaign gameplay is getting mixed feedback. The Matterspark mechanics, aka the “ball” gameplay, have rubbed some folks the wrong way, and the early pacing of the missions hasn’t worked for everyone.
Content creator Kujay praised the narrative team, saying that they “absolutely cooked” with the story, but also pointed out a recurring issue: the new Matterspark’s “forced ball gameplay.” He felt that while the campaign’s writing and structure were excellent, “but the constant forced ball gameplay REALLY detracts from the campaign experience,” he said.
Haderaxe, who pulled a 15-hour session to power through the campaign, echoed that the narrative is very well put, but some of the gameplay mechanics are overused. They said, “I think the story is incredible… Mechanics are overused, but I actually like ball and think it’s too strong, honestly. “
Another player, Glorp, had a similar take. They were fully on board with the narrative, saying the campaign story was “super good” and that they “loved it,” though they admitted the gameplay side of things didn’t do as much for them and said it “felt a bit dragged out.”
Popular Destiny 2 lore content creator and expert MyNameIsByf kept it simple: “Top 3 Destiny Campaign. We have come a long way since ‘I don’t even have time to explain…’ Hats off, narrative team. You aced it.”
Mactics, known for his build guides and in-depth breakdowns, praised the story as “absolutely insane.” He specifically pointed out that the Matterspark/Kepler abilities felt “way too trivial up until the final mission, where you actually have fun puzzles and cool interactions with them. The pacing of complexity feels off.”
JOverrated, another Destiny 2 content creator, said the campaign got them more invested in Destiny’s story than ever before. “The Edge of Fate campaign has me more invested in Destiny 2’s story than I’ve ever been before,” they said. “The story is insane, the puzzle mechanics made encounters more fun, and the balance of respecting people’s time/grind feels great. Congrats to all my friends at Bungie, y’all cooked.”
One fan gave the story a straight-up 9/10, calling it a better narrative than The Witch Queen, which has long been considered one of Bungie’s strongest expansions. CharOnTwitch, a popular Twitch streamer, agreed, saying it was “as good as Witch Queen.”
But not everything landed. Even players who loved the story had issues with other parts of the campaign. The new Kepler abilities, especially the “ball” mechanic, are a common target. Many felt they were overused, boring, or just broke the pacing.
And there’s more on the way! The new raid, Desert Perpetual, is set to release later this week. Thanks to some early leaks and datamining, we already have a glimpse at what kind of raid gear might be up for grabs.
