Insider claims the era of permanent console exclusives for Xbox “is over.”
Xbox has been on a roll lately, releasing massive titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, and most recently, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. The new Indiana Jones game has been widely praised by fans and critics alike, with it currently sitting at a healthy 87 on both Metacritic and OpenCritic.
Traditionally, Xbox has leaned on console exclusives to give it an edge over PlayStation, but a new claim suggests that this strategy may be changing in a big way. Console exclusives have always been a hot topic.
Games like Halo and Forza have historically remained Xbox (and PC)-only, giving fans a reason to pick up the console. However, it seems like Microsoft may be rethinking the concept of permanent exclusivity altogether, according to a well-connected insider.
Xbox Insider Says Permanent Console Exclusivity is Done
This comes from Jez Corden, Executive Editor at Windows Central, who shared his thoughts in a series of posts on X (Twitter). When asked about Xbox’s approach to exclusives, Corden stated bluntly, “The era of Xbox having permanent console exclusives is over.”
Corden’s comments suggest that Microsoft is now exploring a more inclusive approach to its games. He hinted that games like Hellblade II, Avowed, and South of Midnight, which were initially thought to be console exclusives, could eventually make their way to PlayStation. “They’re all coming to PlayStation over time,” Corden said.
He further explained that this isn’t something Microsoft is publicly announcing yet, likely because many of its studios aren’t equipped to handle simultaneous multi-platform launches. “It’s [because] they don’t want to just mandate it on teams that aren’t set up yet for multiplatform simultaneous development.”
If true, this would be a huge shift in strategy for Microsoft. It also aligns with reports suggesting that AAA Xbox games, such as Halo and Forza, could make their way to the PlayStation 5 in the future.
While this would open the door for more players to enjoy these blockbuster titles, it might raise questions about what makes owning an Xbox unique. Of course, it’s important to take this with a grain of salt as Microsoft hasn’t confirmed any of these details.
