Chris Barrett says his $200 million lawsuit against Sony and Bungie has been settled, with his original Marathon director credit now added to the game.
Former Bungie director Christopher Barrett’s legal fight with Sony and Bungie started after his March 2024 termination from the studio, reportedly for misconduct. Barrett later filed a lawsuit seeking at least $200 million, accusing Sony and Bungie of wrongful termination, defamation, breach of contract, wage law violations, and FMLA related claims. Sony and Bungie denied his claims and argued that he was fired for cause after an internal investigation.
The lawsuit went through several major turns after it was first filed. In December 2025, the Delaware Court of Chancery dismissed the case for lack of jurisdiction, meaning the court did not rule on who was right or wrong. Barrett then refiled the lawsuit in Delaware Superior Court in January 2026 and requested a 12-person jury trial.

Now, there is a major update: the case has been settled.
Chris Barrett Confirms Sony And Bungie Lawsuit Settlement
Barrett shared the news on X, saying that he, Sony, and Bungie had reached an agreement to resolve the lawsuit. While the financial terms of the settlement were not shared, Barrett said he was very satisfied with the outcome.
“After a long chapter, I’m happy to share this update,” the X post reads. “Thank you to everyone who supported me along the way.”
The image attached to his post included a longer personal statement from Barrett:
“I am pleased to share that Sony, Bungie, and I have reached an agreement to resolve the lawsuit.
“The outcome is one I am very satisfied with, and I am grateful to everyone who stood by me. Closing this chapter allows me to focus my attention on what’s next in my gaming journey, and I look forward to what lies ahead.”

The statement also included a joint note from the parties:
“The litigation between Sony Interactive Entertainment, Bungie, and Christopher Barrett has been settled. For 25 years, Mr. Barrett contributed to some of Bungie’s most successful games. Mr. Barrett was the original Game Director for Marathon, and his name has been added to the game’s credits to reflect that.”
That last part is one of the biggest pieces of the update. When Marathon launched earlier this year, the credits for the game didn’t include Barrett’s name anywhere. But now, as mentioned in the statement, Bunguie has updated the game’s credits, and Barrett’s name has been added as the “Original Game Director” on the project.
This settlement also comes during a rough period for Bungie. Recently, Sony confirmed a new reduction in Bungie’s workforce, affecting a significant number of employees, including most of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members. Sony also said cuts were made across SIE teams that support Bungie’s operations. The layoffs followed Bungie’s final live service content update for Destiny 2, leaving Marathon as the studio’s main focus moving forward.
