Destiny 2’s Monument of Triumph update brought players back in huge numbers, but a new report claims Bungie’s plans around the reported layoffs and the future of the IP have not changed.

Destiny 2’s Monument of Triumph update is being hailed as one of the best updates the game has received in recent years. Released on June 9, 2026, this was the final live service content update for Destiny 2, closing out a long chapter for the studio and its community.

The response to this update has been extremely positive. Monument of Triumph helped pull Destiny 2 to the No. 1 spot on Steam’s global top sellers chart by revenue, while the player count also saw a major jump. On Steam alone, Destiny 2 climbed past 167,000 concurrent players.

But even with that strong response, it looks like Bungie’s larger plans have not changed.

Following Bungie’s end-of-support announcement for Destiny 2, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported that the studio was planning significant layoffs after the release of Monument of Triumph. Now, according to journalist Paul Tassi, the success of the update has not changed those plans.

Destiny 2’s Huge Player Surge Reportedly Has Not Changed Bungie’s Layoff Plans

In a new video, Tassi talked about the current mood around Destiny 2, the strong player numbers, and the growing concern over what comes next for Bungie. He said he asked sources if the positive reception to Monument of Triumph had changed anything behind the scenes. His answer was not hopeful.

“Even in the wake of this well-performing update, I asked my sources: is there anything that this has done to move the needle, to change things based on how well this has been received, how many people are playing?” Tassi said in the video.

“Destiny’s been third in Steam revenue for pretty much a week. I think it dropped a little today. Like, is there anything that has changed? And the one-word answer I got back is ‘no.’ So all of this is kind of already set in motion. It’s already done.

Former Bungie legal chief says Destiny 2’s live-service end shows the studio is becoming what he "feared" after Sony acquisition, "a publishing imprint," not a "builder of worlds": "I wish I could have done more to keep it alive"

According to previous reporting, there is no greenlit Destiny 3 or another major project ready for the Destiny team to move onto. Tassi also said some longtime Bungie staff or leadership figures could leave around July due to Sony-related payouts or deals, though those departures may be separate from layoffs.

There is also another report claiming the upcoming Bungie layoffs could affect at least 50% of the studio’s workforce. That number is not confirmed. So, take all of this with a grain of salt. Significant layoffs have been reported by reliable sources, but the exact size, timing, and final impact are still unclear.

For Destiny fans, the hard part is that Monument of Triumph has shown there is still real interest in the game. The question now is whether Bungie or Sony sees a future for Destiny beyond this final update.
