Luke Smith Bungie return speculation resurfaces after Bungie’s third Destiny initiative repeats his September Ventrilo message.
Former Destiny director Luke Smith posted a rather specific message on September 17, the same day Bungie announced plans to revive Destiny 2 by restoring previously removed content. His post referenced Ventrilo, the old voice-chat service, and suggested a particular message that would celebrate the franchise’s return.
Update, October 29, 2026: Bungie Head of Product Josh Deane has addressed speculation surrounding the mysterious third Destiny project’s connection to former director Luke Smith.
Responding on X, Deane said he was simply being playful when referencing Smith’s earlier Ventrilo message.
“So much respect for Luke. Learned so much from just being around him but this was just me being playful and wasn’t insinuating anything”
Original story: Smith, who helped shape the original Destiny and later served as Destiny 2’s director, left Bungie in 2024 amid the studio’s leadership restructuring. His potential return had already been the subject of speculation earlier this year, although those claims were dismissed following further reporting.

Now, Bungie’s latest announcement has brought Smith’s September message back into focus, thanks to an unusually specific reference involving the studio’s mysterious third Destiny project.
Luke Smith’s Possible Bungie Return Draws Attention After Mystery Destiny Tease
Today, Head of Product Josh Deane outlined three initiatives connected to the future of Destiny in a new community update.
The first two, Destiny 2 Celebration and Destiny Legacy, are intended to provide new updates for the existing game and make more of the franchise’s history accessible to players. Bungie expects to share further information about both in February 2027.
The third initiative, however, remains unnamed. Bungie included only the following message:
“Redacted [TBD] Launch Ventrilo Message: ‘We’re back’”
Interestingly, this wording closely matches something Luke Smith posted on X six weeks earlier, on September 17, shortly after Bungie revealed its renewed plans for the Destiny franchise.
Smith wrote: “All we need now is a @ventrilo tweet: ‘We’re back.'”

The Ventrilo reference is what makes the connection particularly interesting. “We’re back” is a common comeback message, but referencing the same old voice-chat application Smith mentioned six weeks earlier is far more specific. Bungie could have used countless phrases to tease its secret project, yet it chose the exact combination Smith had suggested in September.
The timing has put Smith’s earlier tweet back in the spotlight, particularly given his history with the Destiny franchise. Whether the matching messages point toward his involvement or are simply a deliberate callback to his post is something Bungie hasn’t addressed.
Earlier this year, rumors claimed Smith could be returning to lead Destiny 3. However, in a report for Forbes, journalist Paul Tassi said he had investigated those claims and found no internal indication of Smith returning. The speculation had originated from a misunderstanding of comments about another developer moving from Marathon back to Destiny.
Bungie also hasn’t identified its third initiative as Destiny 3 or confirmed that it has entered full production.

For now, the studio says its future Destiny plans remain in incubation and validation. Josh Deane has already ruled out a Destiny announcement at The Game Awards 2026, with Bungie’s next major franchise update targeted for February 2027.
The Game Post has reached out to Bungie for comment on the connection between its mysterious Destiny project and Luke Smith’s earlier tweet, as well as whether Smith is involved in the project. We’ll update this article if we receive a response.
Do you think Bungie’s Ventrilo reference is a deliberate nod to Luke Smith, or could it hint at something more involving the former Destiny director? Let us know in the comments.
